Steven Sahn Obituary

Steven Alan Sahn Charleston - Dr. Steven Alan Sahn, 73, of Charleston, SC, passed away August 19, 2016 at Hospice Of Charleston following a courageous battle with Alzheimers and Lewy Body dementia. Dr. Sahn was born in Brooklyn, NY on January 25, 1943. He graduated from Duke University and subsequently from the University of Louisville Medical School. Dr. Sahn completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals and his Fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Dr. Sahn is survived by his wife, Claire Hoefer and his mother, Mildred Sahn of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by his sisters, Sandi Comen (Steve) of Charlotte, NC and Jill Benson (Bob) of Tustin, CA. He was predeceased by his father, Irwin Sahn. He is also survived by his children, Karen Sahn of Aspen, CO, Stacey Petersen (Kirk) Crested Butte, CO, James Sahn (Kerensa) of Austin, TX, Michael Sahn (Tara) of Daniel Island, SC and Rachel Hill(Alex) of Daniel Island, SC. He is survived by grandchildren, Sydney, Turner and Severyn Petersen, Jimmy Sahn, Maya Hill and Charlie Sahn, and stepsons, Michael Uricchio and Nicholas Uricchio, both of James Island, and numerous nieces and nephews. Dr. Sahn served as Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina for 30 years. Dr. Sahn was twice awarded the Alfred Soffer Award for Editorial Excellence. In 2011, Dr. Sahn was awarded the American Thoracic Society's Trudeau Medal, a prestigious lifetime achievement award recognizing his major contributions to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of lung disease. Dr. Sahn's contributions in the field of pulmonary medicine are extensive, contributing more than 1,000 published articles. Patients were referred to Dr. Sahn from all over the country. His patients routinely wrote him notes of gratitude, not only for his talents as a gifted physician, but for his depth of care and compassion. Dr. Sahn's legacy and expertise will continue by all those he trained through the fellowship programs and his extensive publications. Dr. Sahn often reminded his physicians-in-training that doctors need to balance their work life with precious quality family time, and he demonstrated this philosophy by example. Dr. Sahn (Coach Steve) coached many of his children's sports teams, from baseball to basketball and club soccer teams. Coach Steve taught lessons on the ball field that many still remember and cherish today. Coach Steve was always willing to teach and coach any player who wanted to learn. Unless a pressing out-of-town work engagement required his presence, Coach Steve never missed a game or practice. An avid sports enthusiast, Dr. Sahn was highly passionate about the Duke Blue Devils, the St. Louis Cardinals and Green Bay Packers. Love for his favorite teams made for lively discussion, friendly rivalries, and a high energy game-watching experience. The family would like to thank Dr. David Bachman for his wonderful care. Dr. Sahn was especially fond of Lakisha Rivera and Anna Quiroz. The family would also like to extend an heartfelt thanks to the staff at Ashley Gardens Alzheimers Special Care Unit and Hospice of Charleston. Claire is so thankful for the support of the Caregiver Support Group of Respite of Charleston. Dr. Sahn is loved by so many and will be sorely missed by all of us whose lives he touched and influenced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MUSC Foundation in support of the Steven A. I will never forget presenting research to Dr Sahn when I was a Fellow in 1995. He was so encouraging to me. The effect that has on a young doctor is tremendous. I know Steve had the same effect on thousands of young doctors. He will be so missed. I practice Pulmonary Medicine today in the shadow of Dr Sahn.

Steven Sahn was and is a giant in the medical world upon whose shoulders so many of us who he trained stand when we practice medicine. You can't replace him, you can only hope to emulate him in some small way.

It is problematic to put into words the influence that Steve had on my life and career. He was a dear friend. He is more responsible for my career success than any other person. I miss you, Steve.

Our deepest condolences to the entire Sahn family. Dr Sahn's legacy will survive into perpetuity. He was a brilliant clinician, fiercely competitive, and driven to succeed; however, his greatest attribute (among the plethora that he had) was his passion for life (his family, medicine, and his beloved sports teams). He made all of us not just better doctors, but, more importantly, better people. He helped greatly shape the evolution of my soul, and he will never be forgotten. Although he passed too soon, we were all extremely fortunate to have had him in our lives. He deeply touched everybody who interacted with him, on any level, which placed him in the rarefied position that he so rightfully deserved. May he rest in peace and may his beautiful family draw strength from the impeccable life that he lived!!

Claire,

What an honor it has been to have known Steve! I especially appreciate the relationship he and Julie forged as there were likely not many who could have performed to his expectations. They were definitely a pair! His passion for his work will forever be etched in my memory. There are many good ones but the great are few and far between. Steve was great! My love to you and yours!

How little did I know when I visited you and presented you with a "golfing pillow with the 18th green" on it (also the number of your room) would be my last time seeing you! You gave me a hug which I will cherish for the rest of my life! Your stay was short, but look how much you accomplished. May you rest in peace for always!! You and Claire's FRIEND, Ida

I believe I was his third female pulmonary fellow. He was an excellent teacher and mentor. As a Kentucky fan, he and I always had a great time talking basketball. He is irreplaceable

Dr. Sahn was one of my greatest mentors. He spent hours with me, teaching a lawyer about pulmonary medicine and what a great teacher he was. It was always a delight to have a case I could work on with him. I am better having known him. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

Dr Sahn (no matter how many years I have been out of training, I could never call him Steve) was not only an integral part of the physician I became but also the person I am today. Although his accomplishments are myriad and CV is clearly too long to be adequately summarized in a few paragraphs, I think that the amazing training that he provided his fellows over the last three decades is his greatest legacy. I, my colleagues, and our patients are forever indebted to him.
