Stella Shisko Obituary

SHISKO, Stella Stella Kowalski Shisko, age 83, of Charleston, wife of Joseph Shisko, died Tuesday, October 17, 2006. A memorial service will be held at The Unitarian Church of Charleston on Archdale Street at 4:30 pm on Thursday, October 19, 2006. Stella was born the 7th of January, 1923, in Cohoes, New York, where the Hudson and Mohawk rivers meet. She attended Parochial and Public schools. Her enjoyment of learning started early and continued for many years. Her childhood pastimes included swimming in the summer and a great love for ice skating in the winter. In 1940 Stella entered the Bellevue School of Nursing, which was affiliated with the NYU College of Medicine. In Subsequent years, she attended several colleges as she followed her husband, Joe, in his military and government assignments. Stella received a BA, magna cum laudefrom Charleston Southern University. Later she received a Masters degree cum laude from The Citadel. Stella married Joseph Shisko in April, 1943. She was a Public Health Nurse for ten years. Later, Stella entered the field of education as a Diagnostic Prescriptive teacher. After her retirement from various school systems, Stella began her final career as a travel agent. Between their personal travels, business travels and her husband's overseas assignments, Stella visited 78 countries and all of the major rivers of the world from the Amazon to the Yangtze. Some of her adult interests were reading, volunteer work and live theatre. Stella is survived by her husband of 63 years, Joseph Shisko of Charleston, her two sons, Joseph S. Shisko and his wife Buie of Charleston, and Michael C. Shisko and his wife Tess of Allen, Texas, six grandchildren, Sarah, Joseph, Seabrook, McKinnon, Kirsten and Alyssa and two of her sisters, Genevieve Lahut and Alouise Reo of New York. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of Charleston, 3870 Leeds Avenue, Suite 101, North Charleston, SC 29405 or to The Unitarian Church, 4 Archdale Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
