Sonja Penland Obituary

Sonja Gibson Penland CHARLESTON - Sonja Gibson Penland of Charleston, SC, entered her heavenly home on February 6. Born in rural Westminster, SC, to Ezra Jack and Lizzie Lou Gibson, she was one of 8 children in a very loving family. She studied nursing at MUSC School of Nursing and formed deep friendships there that lasted for decades. Upon becoming a registered nurse,she nursed for over 30 years, mostly at Roper Hospital. She was married to Bob Penland of Lexington, NC, until his death in 1983. Their children are Melanie Mixon (Greg), Kim Marshall (Brad), and Jeff Penland. Beloved grandsons are Eric, Brian, and Kyle Mixon, and Johnny Marshall. Her children remember her as a loving, selfless mother who had at one time enjoyed playing cards, bowling, visiting beaches, and HAM radio. She began an unbroken tradition of family vacations at Edisto Beach in 1993. She was an excellent cook and seamstress, and her gentle spirit will be missed by many. Membership at Pinecrest Baptist Church in Charleston set a foundation of faith for her family. She is survived by her children and grandchildren; sisters, Pat Kimmell, Elaine Prater, Brenda Greer; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; husband; siblings, Jack Gibson, Jr., Billy Gibson; and sisters, Peggy Wise and Betty Patterson. Per her request, in lieu of a memorial service, the family plans to celebrate her life at a later date.
