Silverio Almeida Obituary

ALMEIDA, Silverio On January 29, 2007, Silverio Pedro Almeida, husband of Christine Renaud Almeida and a resident of Kiawah Island, SC was tragically killed in an automobile accident. Silverio Almeida was born in Hudson, MA on July 27, 1933, the son of Joseph Almeida and Izaura Teixeira Almeida. He attended Clark University for his undergraduate education, Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned a Masters in Physics, and Cambridge University in Cambridge, England where he earned a Ph.D in Physics. He conducted his post-graduate work at the University of California-Berkley and his post-doctorate work at the CERN Laboratories in Switzerland. He was internationally recognized for his research and teachings in particle physics and optics, serving on subcommittees for NATO and receiving numerous awards and recognition from his peers. Dr. Almeida was an accomplished educator and leader. He was a professor of Physics for 21 years at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. He was appointed Chairman of the Physics Department at UNC Charlotte in 1989, where he served for 9 years. During his tenure, he developed the optics research program, in addition to many other achievements. Dr. Almeida also served as Interim Chair of the Physics Department at the College of Charleston. In his much deserved retirement, Silverio Almeida loved playing tennis with his wife and family, and taking digital photography of his beloved Kiawah Island, family and travels. Many of his days were spent cooking fantastic meals for his wife and family. Surviving are his wife, Christine Almeida of Kiawah Island, SC; son, Christopher Almeida of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Alicia Almeida Bowers of Charlotte, NC; sisters Linda Granger of Paxton, MA and Aurea Duggan of Worcester, MA; and granddaughters, Emma-Katherine and Annelise Bowers. Relatives and friends of Dr. and Mrs. Silverio Almeida are invited to attend the memorial services at the Church of Our Saviour on John's Island, on Saturday, February 3, 2007 at 3:00. Dear Christine and family,
Deepest sympathy from and old Oak Manor neighbor and someone who worked with Sil for 14 of the years he was at VT. I am sorry I never made it down to visit (I had promised Sil this year would be it).
If it had not been for Sil's effort our dept. may not have gotten the Price's Fork Observatory when it did. I have fond memories of some delicious shared meals (when you lived in Indian Run), some animated conversations about philosophical topics, and an intersting stint with Sil on the "Architecture Committee of the Oak Manor Homeowner Association. May your memories help you fill the void and give you strength for the future. All of you are all in my thoughts at this difficult time. He will be missed.
