Sigmund Decker Obituary

Rev. Sigmund S. Decker CHARLESTON - Rev. Sigmund S. Decker, 85, formerly of Warren, PA, passed away on Friday, January 2, 2015, at Carolina's Medical Center of Charlotte, NC, after doing what was most important to him, visiting family over the holidays. Rev. Decker was born April 13, 1929, in Warren, PA and was currently residing in Charleston, SC with his daughter for the past 6 years. He is the son of the late Harry A. and Alma A. Watt Decker. A graduate of Gettysburg College and Seminary, Rev. Decker served parishes at Grace Lutheran Church in Brookville, PA, First Lutheran in Ridgway, PA. and retired after serving as Chaplain and Social Service Director of the Lutheran Home at Kane, PA. Rev. Decker was a member with his wife, Carol, at Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church. While living in South Carolina, he attended the Holy Spirit Lutheran Church. He served in the U.S. Air-force. While stationed in Germany, he found his calling in ministry and spreading the love of the Lord. For the rest of his life, he was a dedicated servant of God and relished in ministering to the needs of his church, family, and the larger community. Always willing to go visit the home-bound and ill, he offered his ministry to all who needed him. He lived the word he spoke. He was very positive and uplifting. He could find humor in many situations where others would have been defeated. Rev. Decker was a great husband, the best father a child or adult could ever have, and a wonderful friend, who touched the lives of so many people. In his free time, he loved hunting and hiking in the Allegheny National Forest with friends and family. He loved the outdoors. Camping trips were a yearly event and have so many fond memories attached. He is survived by two daughters, Linda Houari, and husband, Kamal, Grove City, PA, and Judy Decker, Charleston, SC; two sons, David Decker, Catonville, MD, and Mark Decker, Hermosa Beach, CA; one brother, Arthur Decker, Williamsport, PA; his step-mother, Julia Decker, Warren, PA; four grandchildren, Sean Houari, and wife, Sheila, Sonya McIntyre, and husband, Chris, Leila Houari, and Sarah Decker; two great-grandchildren, Kole and Mikayla McIntrye, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Decker. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 25, at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 3075 Bees Ferry Road, Charleston, SC 29414. A funeral service in Warren, PA was held on Friday, January 9, 2015. The Rev. Ralph Jones, Bishop of Northwestern PA Synod, ELCA, presided, The Rev. David Blank, senior pastor, preached, and The Rev. Jeffrey Ewing, associate pastor, assisted. Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery, Warren, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Building Fund at the Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 3075 Bees Ferry Road, Charleston, SC 29414.
