Shirley Wheeler Obituary

Shirley Jean Bishop Wheeler N. CHARLESTON - Shirley Jean Bishop Wheeler, 90, of North Charleston, South Carolina, wife of the late Robert L. Wheeler, passed away on Monday, August 25, 2025, at her home. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her Funeral Service will be held Friday, August 29, 2025, in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Road, at 12:00 pm. Interment to follow at Dorchester Memory Gardens, 11000 Dorchester Road, Summerville. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:30 am to 12:00 pm. Born on December 20, 1934, in Warren, Ohio, Shirley was the daughter of Gay and Helen Bishop. She grew up in Braceville, Ohio. When her husband joined the Navy, they lived in several states before choosing North Charleston, South Carolina, as the place to raise their family. When her children were young, Shirley was very active in the community. She supported Park Circle Friday Night Teen Dances, cheerleading, arts and crafts, football, Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, PTA, and serving as a substitute teacher at North Charleston Elementary. She also helped walk petitions around the community to make North Charleston an incorporated city. After her children were grown, she began her career with the Department of the Navy, Southern Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, where she worked until her retirement in 1997. Shirley is survived by her daughter, Denise D. Wheeler of North Charleston; her daughter-in-law, Christine Wheeler of Mt. Pleasant; and her grandchildren: Michael P. Wheeler II and his wife, Michelle, of Washington, D.C.; and Parker Bellamy and her husband, David, and their son, Tanner Bellamy, of Mt. Pleasant. She is also survived by her sisters, Bertha Wagner and Marian Smith; her brother, Lee Bishop; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert L. Wheeler; her son, Michael P. Wheeler; her parents, Gay and Helen Bishop; and her younger brother, Ray Bishop. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
