Shirley Cordovano Obituary

Shirley E. Mimmack Cordovano GREENSBORO, NC - Shirley E. Mimmack Cordovano, 82, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 16, 2018. Shirley was born on February 7, 1936 in Oswego, NY to the late Rollo H. Mimmack and Eva Mae Brown Mimmack. She was a long time employee of the Chesapeake & Potomac (C&P) Telephone Company in Washington, D.C., where she was an operator handling calls for the White House and surrounding areas, and later worked as a Supervisor at the company's headquarters. After moving to Summerville, SC she became active in her community - from helping to bolster and expand the Republican Party in Dorchester County to being involved in her daughter's swim team and myriad of school activities, to opening her home and heart to many foster children from which she gained great personal satisfaction as well as respect from the local community. Shirley and her husband Carl later moved to (and retired in) Greensboro, NC due to Carl's work for AT&T. She had the life-changing experience to live in Kuwait, Germany, and Saudi Arabia as she travelled the world in connection with her husband's job. She loved to travel - she didn't like to fly - but she loved to travel (especially on the Orient Express train) and did so throughout the entirety of Europe and Southwest Asia. Her other great passion outside of her family was reading, completing jigsaw puzzles, and watching her beloved Washington Redskins football team and Duke University football and basketball games. Shirley's dedication to family and friends was evident in everything she did, and she will forever be remembered for her compassion and assistance to everyone in need. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, and cousin to her entire family and she will be forever missed by all. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her four siblings - James R. (Betty) Brown of Oswego, NY; Florence (Jimmy) Swann of Baltimore, MD; R. Charles ("Huck") (Mary) Mimmack of Armour, SD; and George H. Mimmack of Omaha, NE. Shirley is survived by her husband Carl, daughter Kim Logue (Alexandria, VA), sister-in-law Patricia (Doug) Mimmack-Edwins (Omaha, NE), brother-in-law Michael (Velma) Cordovano (Altha, FL), nieces and nephews Susan (Joe) Benzing and Jay-B (Gwen) Brown (Oswego, NY), John W. (Laurie) Mimmack and Lisa M. Mimmack (Sioux Falls, SD), Daniel (Connie) Mimmack and Deborah Gee (Baltimore, MD), and James R. Mimmack, Michelle Mimmack, and Tiffany Mimmack (Don) Burkhardt (Omaha, NE), along with several additional great-nieces and nephews, and cousins. She is also survived by her long-time friend Diana Logan who was of great comfort, support, and humor to Shirley and her family during the last several months of her life. Shirley's entire family would like to also recognize and thank Maura Barber and Melanie Fuqua of Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro for their love, care, and support of Shirley during the final year of her life. Shirley adored them both and always looked forward to their visits and conversations. Visitation and a celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at Forbis & Dick Funeral Service, Guilford Chapel, 5926 W. Friendly Ave, Greensboro, NC. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Shirley's life. Visitation will be held from 10:00am to 10:45am, with services at the Chapel beginning at 11:00am. Interment will take place directly following at the Westminster Gardens Cemetery Mausoleum, 3601 Whitehurst Rd, Greensboro. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your local Salvation Army organization or local animal shelter.
