Linda Johnson

I'm so sorry to hear Sarah Walton has passed away. I've been asking around where she might live so to try and visit her. I am David Walton's daughter Linda or may be known by some as Betty. I was wanting to see her and ask her some about some history on my Dad's fathers side of the family for I never hear much of anything about it. I have a picture of Great Uncle Van and my Dad favors his looks. We lived next to the skating rink when I was born up until maybe the age of 3 or 4. I remember lots about that skating rink like when they played records they were not your traditional black ones but were colored red, yellow, green etc. The drink machine would drop a cup and fill it in front of you. The back wall they would decorate at Christmas time with Santa Claus and the reindeer and Rudolf's nose was lit up red. I remember I believe wooden horses on wheels and maybe some flat round wooded things on wheels too but never saw them used. I also remember the half moon shape steps outside the front building and the neon lights that lit up. Inside the new skates for sell were in glass case in think by the skate room where you got rental skates and those pretty pom poms that went on skates. My first pair of skates for Christmas along with the skate case came from Port Park skating Rink. I can even remember the smell of the building especially in the storage room. I remember I did not know how to skate and would pull myself around until I got to the back wall then I had nothing to hold on to? Falling once and someone picked me up and took me to the lobby area but can not remember a face. How could we be so close that I have all those memories yet when we moved to Goose Creek I have only one or two vague memories of going for a visit when they lived on Maple st or drive? The last time I saw Sarah was at my own Daddy's viewing briefly I think it must have been Vanette that brought her, that was 11 years ago. To this day and I am 52 years old I will ride by occasionally and remember Port Park and the old house next door. Sometimes I think to go up and ask if I may come inside the old building but I doubt it would be the same. I think Sarah & Van lived in the back part of the building once when they owned it. I was suppose to be named after someone who name was Betty could it be Sarah's daughter Betty? They will always be in my heart.

Vanette (and Ann, Betty, & Patsy),
How did your Mother ever put up with us?
So many great memories and fun times at the skating rink and your home.
Rock is so right. We've lost so many of our "Hanahan Family", but we'll always be a family.
Always,

Vanette (and Ann, Betty, & Patsy),
My thoughts are with you during this time of your loss. I'm always saddened at the loss of another of our "Hanahan Family".
Your Mom and the skating rink were a part of our lives growing up and establishing ourselves in this world. The old car with the speakers on top will always be remembered as part of our class bar bq fundraisers.
Know that all of your classmates and friends from that time in our lives share your loss.
