Sarah Gueldner Obituary

Dr. Sarah Hall Gueldner ISLE OF PALMS - Dr. Sarah Hall Gueldner, 75, passed away at her Isle of Palms, South Carolina home October 4, 2016, surrounded by her family. Sarah was a native of Corryton, Tennessee and a graduate of Gibbs High School. Following graduation from the University of Tennessee College of Nursing in Memphis, she went on to a lifetime career as a nursing scholar. She obtained her Masters degree in nursing from Emory University in Atlanta and later completed her Ph.D. in nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, focusing much of her work on the gerontological issues of aging and well-being. Her career culminated with academic appointments as Dean of the Decker School of Nursing, State University of New York at Binghamton and, prior to that, as Director of the School of Nursing at Pennsylvania State University. She was later named the Arline H. and Curtis F. Garvin Professor of Nursing at Case Western Reserve School of Nursing in Cleveland, Ohio. During her tenure at Case Western, she traveled twice to Africa as a visiting professor, first to The University of Botswana, and later to The University of Buea at Cameroon. Earlier in her career, she enjoyed appointments as Professor and Director of Doctoral Studies at the Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing at Charleston as well as positions at Medical College of Georgia, The University of Georgia, Mississippi University for Women School of Nursing, and The University of Tennessee at Memphis. Over the course of her career, Sarah was a prolific writer, publishing many articles in professional journals, and authoring and co-authoring several books. She collaborated with nursing scholars all over the world, conducting research and advancing nursing education. Sarah is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, served as President and Founding Member of the Society for Rogerian Scholars, and served as First Vice-President, Sigma Theta Tau International. Perhaps Sarah's favorite among her accomplishments was the success of the students she taught. She served on dozens of Masters thesis and doctoral dissertation committees, chairing many. She enjoyed guiding and mentoring students through the graduate studies process. Many of her students remained life-long friends and associates. With a warm and inviting personality, Sarah never met a stranger, making friends with virtually everyone she met. Her joyful, whimsical, and larger-than-life energy lit up any room she entered. Sarah defined her life by helping others, both personally and professionally, whether that meant advocating for them, giving them a place to stay, or gifting them a phone call, a card, a seashell, or even a car. Dr. Gueldner was predeceased by her parents, Lillian Hill Hall and Joseph Charlton Hall, and brother, Joseph Briscoe Hall. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Dr. Richard Charles Gueldner, Charlotte, North Carolina; by her daughter, Cheryl Gueldner Asbury and son-in-law, Dr. Stephen Todd Asbury, Pasadena, California; son, Neil Richard Gueldner and daughter-in-law, Karen Bennett Gueldner, Charlotte, North Carolina; sister, Dale Hall, Knoxville, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 15th, at Mynatt Funeral Home Fountain City Chapel, 2829 Rennoc Road, Knoxville, TN 37918. The Rev. Scobie Branson will lead the celebration of life at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Immediately following the service, family and friends will proceed to Lynnhurst Cemetery for interment. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing (http://www.nursingsociety.org/why-stti/stti-foundation-for-nursing/make-a-gift) and The Martha E. I woke up with Sarah and Richard on my mind which was a pleasant surprise. It has been awhile, but I guess I am becoming aware of my own aging out.
I remember with delight my knowing both: Sarah riding a camel in Pakistan, she and I visiting Victoria Falls. Sarah, Richard, and I laying on the beach under a blanket at night waiting for a meteor shower. Richard and I fishing during the hatch on the river near their house. These are just some of the wonderful things we shared during my knowing them. Both were exceptionally kind, generous, welcoming, and I never knew a time when either was anything different. Life is good when one has had such people as friends.

I've known Dr Sarah Gueldner since 2008 when she was a professor at University of Botswana that time. She was our family friend and a Godmother to me though we parted a long time ago but my love for her and her Family never died. Her passing left me devastated i can't help how i feel now. I found about these sad news when i was searching for her as i really missed her and tried all the contacts i had but hardly got no luck to get her whereabouts. She was an God Sent Angel indeed with a warm big heart, you can imagine a person of her caliber from US (top parts of the world) befriending someone openly down here inAfrica Southern part of africa for that matter. I'm so saddened but may the will of God be done i believe wr shall meet one day and enjoy our everlasting happiness may your precious soul rest in eternal peace mommy. I'll live you forever.
And for Mr Dick And Neil Gueldner i need your address email and contacts. Mine ;+26774184845 or e-mail at [email protected].

I had the pleasure of being in a small apartment-like social group with Sarah in the mid sixties in Memphis. Everyone was fond of Sarah. I remember her just like the write up conveys.

I am saddened to know that I will not get another funny, sometimes serious, article from Sarah. She was a wonderful writer and a beautiful person. I was fortunate to be involved with Sigma Theta Tau International with Sarah. We continued to be friends for years after that experience-always having a few minutes to talk between meetings. Although I hadn't see her for years, I will miss her, and know she will be missed even more by Dick and their children.

I am saddened to hear of Sarah's passing. She was a mentor to me when I was in graduate school and invited me to participate in a course with the doctoral students which was a weekend of scholarly enlightenment. I will never forget her sweet spirit and love for encouragement of students. She certainly made a difference in my life. Rest well Sarah in the purple skies.

I am saddened to read of
Sarah's death. She was a wonderful caring person. She always saw the best in others. She was a mentor to me and consulted on my research.

Sarah was my room mate for two years in our undergraduate nursing program. Loving, funny, whimsical (a word I borrowed from her obituary)are all words that describe her and her wonderful parents and family. The world is a better place because of the Hall family and because of Sarah. Dava Shoffner

I am so sorry to hear of sweet Sarah's passing . She brought out the best in all of us and certainly made this world a better place. She really did flow through this world- always able to soften the hard edges of others, always able to see both sides of any story. When you talked to Sarah, she always gave you her full attention, even in those situations when there were many people who wanted to talk with her. She genuinely listened and cared about what you had to say. I was so fortunate that Sarah was the one who interviewed (and hired) me for my first teaching job and was my first Department Chair. I learned so much from her... as a faculty member, a researcher, and most importantly-- as an authentic, caring, loving person. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Please know-- she made a difference, and brought out the best in all of us. Her spirit is carried in the hearts of many. Love to you all--- Betsy Pless
