Sarah Broughton Obituary

Sarah Broughton CHARLESTON - Sarah DeVore Broughton, 95, of Charleston, SC, passed away on July 4, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Sarah was born on January 10, 1928, in Mound City, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her father, Andrew DeVore; father and mother, Harry and Bertha Burkestaller; her husband of 35 years, Joseph L. Broughton, Jr.; sister, Gladys Brainovich; brother, Ralph A. DeVore and daughter-in-law, Katharine Broughton. Sarah was a long-standing member of St. John Catholic Church in North Charleston, where she was involved in the choir, the lady's guild and the Catholic deanery. She volunteered with several charitable organizations, including Camp High Hopes. She was a former school bus driver for various local churches. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She never met a stranger and was always willing to help anyone in need. She was an avid Citadel Mall walker for many years. She loved reading and spending time with her family. She is survived by her children: Lary Broughton of Goose Creek, SC; Debbie Baker (Marty); Naomi Broughton (Karen Freischlag) and Ruth Tocco (Larry) all of Charleston, SC; grandchildren: Sarah Anderson (James), James Lutton IV (Samantha Mathison), Lynsey Rushton (Mark) and Maile Whitehead (Kurtis); great-grandchildren: James Anderson III, Daniel Whitehead, Jaxson Rushton, Josephine Whitehead, Ellenore Rushton, and Sarah Rushton. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 10, 2023, from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home West Ashley. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at St. John Catholic Church, 3921 St. Johns Avenue, Charleston, SC 29405. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Park Cemetery, 3715 Azalea Drive, Charleston, SC 29405. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to St. John Catholic Church, the Charleston Animal Society, or Roper St. Francis Foundation (Roper Hospice).
