Sarah Elizabeth Warren Baker COLUMBIA - Funeral for Sarah Elizabeth Warren "Tibba" Baker, 90, of Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Home, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2011, at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church, 1206 Lyttleton Street in Camden. Burial will be in the historic Quaker Cemetery also in Camden. Following the service, the family will receive friends at Aberdeen, 1409 Broad Street in Camden. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mrs. Baker died Saturday, March 5, 2011, at Still Hopes. Born April 19, 1920, in Centerville, Hickman County, Tennessee, a granddaughter of the late Jasper Newton Warren and Sarah Anne Shipp Warren Campbell and Robert Jefferson Waynick and Harriet Elizabeth Hobson Waynick, a daughter of the late Bernice Marie Waynick Warren and William Ewell Warren Sr., she was reared in Centerville and Nashville. She attended Austin Peay University in Clarksville, Tenn., and remained a life-long learner with many interests, especially in the arts. She worked for the Tennessee Department of Public Health for five years prior to her marriage and move to Virginia and later to South Carolina, where she was a long-time resident of Camden. An artist, Mrs. Baker was a former member of the Camden Art Association, the Edisto Island Artists Guild and the S.C. Artists Guild. Her works were shown in numerous exhibitions throughout the state. As a patron of the arts she supported artistic causes, fundraisers and numerous museums throughout the Southeast. As a community volunteer Sarah was a former Girl Scout leader and a Kershaw County hospital volunteer. Mrs. Baker was extremely involved in the Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church in Camden as a Circle Member, Sunday school teacher, U.M.Y.F. leader and as a charter member of the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was also a charter member of the Kirkover Hills Garden Club. A creative homemaker, Sarah loved spending time on the beach at Edisto Island and her hobbies included collecting antiques, bridge, golf and foreign travel. Mrs. Baker was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Earl Cathey Baker of Camden, and son-in-law, John Guyton McLeod Jr. of Dewees Island. Surviving are her daughter, Cassandra Elizabeth Baker "Candy" McLeod of Dewees Island; step-granddaughters, Mary Rebecca Tilton McLeod Connelly (Paul) of Charleston and Amanda Summers McLeod Groves of Savannah, Ga.; nieces and nephews, Pamela S. Warren Barnett and Viveka I. Warren Barnett of Houston, Texas, Gail McGowan Scott (Boots) of Hendersonville, Tenn., Leslie H. McGowan of Old Hickory, Tenn., Bobby Wayne McGowan of Texas, Mary Jean Baker Gilligan (Robert) of Wilmington, Del., Ronald F. Baker (Beth) of Sterling, Va., Timothy J. Baker (Nancy) of Centreville, Va., and Gary Baker (Eileen) of Pineville, La. The family would like to express sincere appreciation to Evelyn Harris, Regency Hospice, the staff of Still Hopes, especially the Jane Bruce Guignard Skilled Nursing Center and Harmony Care Hospice for their loving and compassionate care.
