Sara Shuler Obituary

SHULER, Sara ORANGEBURG - Sara Tillotson Shuler, 79, of 346 Club Acres, Orangeburg, died Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Ascension Hospice House in Irmo, SC, after an extended illness. A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2009 at St. Andrews United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dr. J. Michael Smith officiating. A time of visitation will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. Mrs. Shuler was born in Florence, a daughter of the late William Edwin Tillotson and Ione Roddey Tillotson. Sara attended schools in Hartsville and graduated from Converse College in 1951. Accepting a teaching position at Orangeburg Junior High School, she met her husband of 56 years just a few days after arriving. They were married two years later in June of 1953. In 1964, Sara helped to organize and taught in the newly chartered independent schools in Orangeburg, many years as head teacher of the upper school. "Miss Sara's" influence remains today in the lives of numbers of her former students. A charter member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, she loved her church and was active throughout her life. She also served as Church Historian for a number of years. After teaching came years of world travel with USC groups and many new friendships. Her true love was the beach where many enjoyable years were spent with her family and friends at her part time residence at DeBordieu in Georgetown County. Survivors include her husband, Hubert L. Shuler, Jr. of the home; three children, Hubert L. Shuler, III (Bert) and his wife Julianne, Orangeburg, Edwin Tillotson Shuler (Eddie), Charlotte, NC, and Lynn Clary Smith and husband Les, Chapin; six grandchildren, Hubert L. Shuler, IV, Asley Elizabeth Shuler, Andrew Shuler, Dean Shuler, William Douglas Clary, Hampton Shuler Clary and Sara Caroline Clary. Memorials may be made to St. Andrews United Methodist Church, 1980 Columbia Rd., Orangeburg, SC 29115, Ascension Hospice House, 7142 Woodrow St., Irmo, SC 29063 or to The Oaks, PO Box 9005, Orangeburg, SC 29116. I am deeply saddened to learn of Miss Sara's death. She was a very gracious and intelligent woman. She was my teacher and later became my good friend. My deepest sympathies to Mr. Shuler and the children.

I was fortunate to have Miss Tillotson as my math teacher in the 7th grade at the new Jr. High School her first year in Orangeburg. Years later, I was among those who helped with WHA's organization in 1964, & I became a charter teacher & friend with Sara. She was a dedicated leader for the faculty and students and taught my sons. Her students of geometry & other math courses were well prepared for college. Sara loved her family and her church, and I send my sincere sympathy to her loved ones who will forever treasure her memory. BWG
