Sara McCuen Obituary

Sara Rector McCuen COLUMBIA, SC - Sara Rector McCuen "Mama Shay" entered her long-awaited Heavenly home on Friday May 7, 2010, the anniversary of the loss of her precious daughter, Kathy. With her children at her side, she peacefully transferred into the arms of her Lord and the host of family and friends awaiting her. Sara McCuen was born in Darlington County on August 17, 1915. She was the daughter of the late Cornelia Henderson Rector and Victor Elliott Rector. She graduated with honors from the University of South Carolina in 1936 with a B. A. in Elementary Education. She received her Masters Degree in Education from USC in 1978. Sara completed undergraduate school and joined the American Red Cross (USO), serving in Germany at the completion of WW II. While in post-war Germany she appreciated the rare opportunity to witness a profound moment in history, the Nuremburg Trials for Nazi war criminals. Posing as a reporter, she observed highly secured sessions of the Trials, an experience she often recounted with reverence over her lifetime. Upon returning from Europe, she began her half-century long teaching career in Bethune, S.C., before returning to Richland County School District I in the early 1950's where she remained throughout her working life. She taught briefly at Hyatt Park Elementary, then moved to Crayton Elementary in 1955, where she taught for twelve years. She transferred to St. Andrews (H. B. Rhame) Elementary in 1967, where she remained until retirement in 1981. She primarily taught fourth and fifth grade English during her career. Although she retired from full-time teaching, she kept her deep love for the profession, continuing to substitute for District 1 and also providing adult education for the S. C. Department of Corrections. She continued teaching for almost twenty years past retirement, finally leaving formal teaching at the age of 82. Sara McCuen was a unique and influential educator whose passion and philosophy transcended traditional curriculum. Although her special interests were reading, writing, literature, and phonics, she consistently emphasized human values and fostered self-confidence and self-worth in each of her students. She maintained a genuine love for each of her students and held sacred her roll in their educational, emotional, and spiritual growth. She was extremely honored to receive the Outstanding Educator Award in 1981, presented by the USC College of Education "In recognition of exemplary contributions to the school children of S. C.". In addition to her incredible influence on her family, her legacy will flourish in the multitude of students, parents, and fellow staff whose lives she impacted. Sara was an adventurous, vivacious, and passionate lover of life. She enthusiastically entertained family and friends with animated humorous tales from the classroom and from her remarkable life experiences. She was a master storyteller. She was a fierce advocate for those less fortunate and a steadfast supporter of right and good...a champion of integrity, always. She was a long-term active member of Shandon Presbyterian Church until illness prevented her participation. She was associated with numerous educational and community activities and organizations. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was also involved in the Town Theater and The Red Stockings Review in her earlier years. She reveled "in the limelight", providing humorous and touching readings for various community and church gatherings. Sara married Richard "Dick" McCuen in December, 1949. He preceded her in death in 1979. She is survived by two children, Georgia Troficanto of Chapin, SC, and Richard (Kim) McCuen of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Lisa Kaplan (Orson Smith) of Anderson, S. C., Jennifer Sanders of Cumming, G.A., Kristen, Richard, and Ryan Troficanto of Chapin, SC and Richard "Ricky", Andrew "Drew", and Katelyn McCuen of Mt. Pleasant, SC. She also leaves four great-grandchildren - Justin, Katy, Hannah, and Blake. She was predeceased by her eldest daughter, Katharine M. King in May, 1987, and her sister, Katharine R. Fellers, in February, 2008. Her family expresses deepest appreciation to Ms. Debra Taylor, Sara's faithful and kind companion and caregiver during these last most challenging and heart-breaking years of her illness. Her loving care and devotion allowed Sara to remain at home until her last few days. Memorials may be made to her treasured church, Shandon Presbyterian, to Crooked Creek Senior Programs, or to Project Pet, as a tribute to Sara's life-long love and compassion for animals. Services will be held at Shandon Presbyterian Church on Monday, May 10, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Serving as pall bearers will be grandchildren, Richard Troficanto, Justin Kirby, Ricky McCuen, Drew McCuen, Ryan Troficanto, and close family friend, Nick Johnston. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, May 9, 2010 at CAUGHMAN-HARMAN FUNERAL HOME, IRMO/ST. Georgia and Richard - We were so sorry to learn of Aunt Sara's passing. We found out the same day Callie dies (5/9). Aunt Sata was a remarkable person and I missed seeing and talking with her the last few years. We are still in a state of shock about Callie. She was in a nursing home but had been doing very good. Our prayers are with you and we appreciated the message from Richard.

Georgia and Richard,
I was so sad to learn of your mom's death only after her funeral. I would love to have seen all of you. She was truly a remarkable woman, and not only my cousin but my good friend when I lived in Columbia. I was privileged to see her "re-invent herself" after a serious accident in her later years that severely affected her health and mobility. She and I did gentle stretching exercises together, and then - unbelievably - progressed to step aerobics and weight lifting! In a few months' time she transformed herself into a trim-figured glamor girl complete with upswept hairdo and stylish clothes. One of her ex-pupils thought she was "Mrs. McCuen's daughter," making her younger by an entire generation! It was a great privilege to know her, and I will always treasure my memories of her.

Mrs. McCuen didn't teach me, but I remember very vividly her reading the poem, "Casey at the Bat" when I was in the fifth grade. I had never heard anyone read a poem like that and capture my attention like she did. She inspired me to become a teacher and share with my students the excitement she had. I know this is a very emotional time for you, but may you take comfort in knowing that she left her legacy here with many people. She was one in a million!

I loved Mrs. McCuen. I have thought about her so many times in my life. Yes, she was also my teacher in fourth grade at Crayton - the very best year of my elementary school years. Whenever anyone asks me who was your favorite teacher, hands down & no second thoughts, it was Mrs. McCuen. She was an incredible person and highly gifted teacher who will always be remembered in my heart.

Mrs. McCuen also taught me in 4th grade at Crayton. She was a wonderful teacher. She deeply cared about me in class, as she recognized I needed glasses that year, as well as helped me out when I broke my thumb and also got pneumonia. She was my teacher when President Kennedy was killed, and she took the time to explain to us kids what it was about. She was not only a great teacher but a caring soul. Walter Durst, Columbia SC

Mrs McCuen was the most important positive influence on my life as a child. She was my 4th grade teacher, and came into my life when I was troubled, insecure, and so lost. My family was in chaos. Mrs. McCuen took a precocious, immature, hyperactive child and saw what I could become. She loved each of her students, but she made me feel like I was the most special person she knew. She calmed me. She told me she loved me. She gave me extra responsibility and knew that I would rise to her expectations.

She read to our class, even though we could all read. I still remember her reading "The Incredible Journey" and "A Taste of Blackberries." I developed a love for reading from her that has now been passed down to my own children.

She had a mirror in her room, and a sign which read, "This is the most important person in the world", and she would have us read it when we looked into that mirror. I wonder how many children she sent out into the world with a sense of self-worth because of her belief in us.

I was blessed to have been able to see her a few years ago and tell her all of this in person. I had many teachers in my life, but Mrs. McCuen was the one who made the biggest imprint on my life. I can say with all honesty, I don't know if I would have survived my childhood and adolescence if she had not been there during that most critical year.

Thank you, God, for placing this incredible woman on earth. She truly lived a life of value, and she showed me who You are.
