Sara Breibart Obituary

Sara Bolgla Breibart Charleston - Sara Bolgla Breibart of Charleston, widow of Solomon (Sol) Breibart, died on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at the age of 98. Friends and relatives are invited to a remembrance service at Bishop Gadsden starting at two o'clock on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, with a reception to follow until four o'clock. A private burial will be held at the Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Coming Street Cemetery. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Born in Brest-Litovsk, Poland, on July 15, 1920, Sara was the daughter of Morris and Julia Bolgla. She grew up in Augusta, GA, graduated from Augusta Junior College and the University of Georgia, and lived in Charleston since 1942, when she and Sol were married. A member of the congregation of Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim for most of her adult life, Sara was also an avid and life-long Democrat whose politics ranked with her Judaism as core values in her life. She worked until the age of 92, and was a spitfire who made her presence known on her jobs, most notably the Clerk of Council for the Charleston County Council where she worked for 15 years and the Program Coordinator at the Charleston County Library where she worked for 32 years starting in 1980. Loyal to and loved by family and friends of multiple generations, she was the mother of Carol Breibart of Denver, CO, and Mark Breibart (Sheryl White) of Boston, MA, and the doting grandmother of Becka Simons (Stephan) of Missoula, MT, and Emma Breibart-White of Chicago, IL. Sara was preceded in death by her brothers, Hillel Bolgla of Chicago, IL, and Benjamin Bolgla of Augusta, GA. The family would particularly like to recognize and thank the many devoted friends and extended family who supported Sara after Sol's death. We would also like to express our appreciation for the dedicated and compassionate staff at the Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community on James Island where she lived after leaving her cherished home on Confederate Circle in South Windermere six years ago. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Planned Parenthood (www.plannedparenthood.org) or the Southern Jewish Historical Society (www.jewishsouth.org). A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

It was my honor and pleasure to work with Sara since 2002 at the Charleston County Public Library. After an initial rough start while she sussed out my competency (I passed the exam), we became great friends as we collaborated on many CCPL programs, including the now long-running MET Opera Live! series. The story of how she browbeat the Metropolitan Opera when they threatened to cancel our showings at the Library looms large in her legend, and in my fond memories. It was also my pleasure to met Sol, and I treasure the bow-tie that he gave me when I didn't have one for a formal event. I wish Peace Be With You to her family.

We have lost a most amazing and energetic spirit. Marty and I cherish the time we spent with Sara over meals or at gatherings discussing people, places, and many, many things. She especially enjoyed Jewish Studies Sunday morning lectures during her more active days. We appreciated her opinions because she always had information to back them up; she broadened our perspective...and she loved a good fight.
Sara never missed an opportunity to share the joy she took in her children and granddaughters. I wanted you, her family, to know how deeply she loved you.
As our son, Jake, lives in the Confederate Circle house, there will never be a time when we do not think fondly of the Breibart family. But we knew Sara the best of all of your clan, and we will miss her greatly.
We send condolences on your loss. You always have our house to visit if/when you return to Charleston in the future.
Love from Jeri and Marty Perlmutter
(Marty is out-of-state but I hope to see you at the remembrance service tomorrow.)

To the Breibart Family,

During her time as Clerk of County Council for Charleston County Council, Ms. Sara suggested to my mother, Nancy S. White (at that time a 30 year county employee) that I should apply for employment with Charleston County during the summers to help with college expenses. Living and having been educated in Georgia, she was knowledgeable about Spelman College from which I graduated in 1981. On a trip to the Atlanta area, Mr. Sol and Ms. Sara stopped by to deliver a "care" package to me from my parents. I've always been grateful that such wonderful people came into my life.

Celebrate a life well lived.
Cherish the memories forever.

Sara was a champion for many. When she connected with a cause, she was passionate and all in. My fond memories include Hanukkah gatherings with the Breibarts and carpooling to Charleston Day School. When the Ashley River Bridge was out, it was cool riding a boat to school. I believe Sara was with the League of Women Voters where she analyzed and strategized at the grass roots level.
Warm condolences to Carol and Mark.

My condolences to the family of Sara Breibart.

My name is Shannon Spiggle, I never had the honor of meeting Mrs. Breibart, however I know of her through the writings of her late husband Solomon. For this, They both have had an impact on my family and

I recently lost my own mother Feb 23rd 2018. After she passed we researched our family history to discover we ( my sister, and our children) are the direct and only living descendants of Rabbi Gustavus Poznanski. Because of the recorded records, we have found our Jewish roots and have embraced our Jewish identity. Thank you Mrs. Breibart and Breibart family for your dedication to our heritage.

I wish peace upon you during this difficult time. Thank you so much again.
