Samuel Witherspoon Obituary

Dr. Samuel M. Witherspoon, Jr. Mt. Pleasant - Dr. Samuel McBride Witherspoon, Jr., 94, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of the late Jon Kirby Witherspoon, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, July 21, 2021. His memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 27, 2021 in Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 302 Hibben Street at 11:00 am. Interment will take place in Christ Church Cemetery at a later date, as of now not determined. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel. Sam was born December 26, 1926 in Marion, South Carolina, son of Samuel McBride Witherspoon and Lila Warren Best Witherspoon. He was a graduate of Clemson University and MUSC. Dr. Sam began his medical practice as a GP in Mullins, SC, and living in Nichols, SC, with the love of his life, Jon. They moved (at Jon's behest) to Mount Pleasant to become an Anesthesiologist at MUSC. He eventually transitioned into private practice in 1969 with a good group of members known on occasion as the "Wentworth Gang" until he went into "semi-retirement". He was a member of Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church and loved to sing in the choir and, on occasion, other venues. A long-time hobby of Sam's was fishing, with excursions "out to the curve and beyond", first for bill fish and eventually marlin. He had a real passion for the Clemson Tigers, both football and baseball, and watched as many games as possible if he was not able to travel there in person. On the other hand, he was late for the game in WW II and that bothered him in some ways much of his life. I feel that he sufficiently made up for it. For the most part this man never met a stranger. The numbers of people who knew him and called him a friend are impossible to name. But if you knew him, then read between the lines above and know that this is meant for you as well. He is survived by his son, Samuel M. Witherspoon III (Teddy) of Cary, NC; two grandchildren, Samuel M. Witherspoon IV, and Caroline I. Witherspoon; and nephews, William Gasque (Brenda), Mark Bostick, Charles Bostick, and Sam Bostic. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jon K. Witherspoon; daughter, Ann K. Witherspoon; and sister, Doris W. Gasque. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 302 Hibben St., Mt Pleasant, SC 29464, A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com. Both Dr Witherspoon and his wife were two of the nicest people you would ever meet. We met them on walks down at the old Pitt Street bridge and around in the old Village of Mt Pleasant many many years ago. We have thought of them fondly throughout these many years as it has been a long time since we had bumped into them. We were so sorry to read of the death of his wife and then of his daughter. But we are happy to know that he hopefully lived a very full and happy long life. Rest in peace Dr Witherspoon. We were and are still blessed to have met and known you. Condolences and prayers to all the family and friends.

Sincerely,
Lisa Weaver and Barbara Weaver
