Samuel Warshauer Obituary

DR. SAMUEL EDWARD WARSHAUER On August 1, 2013, Dr. Samuel Edward Warshauer died at his residence on Wrightsville Beach at the age of 99. A life-long Wilmington resident, he was born on January 24, 1914, to the late Clara (Goldstein) and Max Warshauer. He began first grade when he was 5 and skipped two grades, graduating from New Hanover High School at the age of 15. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and upon graduation began his medical studies at the Medical College of Virginia. A medical doctor at the age of 22, he completed a year of general internship at James Walker Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, a second year of Internal Medicine residency at the Medical College of Virginia, a third year in the coal mining community of Williamson, West Virginia, and a fourth year at the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Upon completing his medical training, he moved back home to Wilmington and opened his practice. World War II was raging at the time, and after less than a year in practice, he joined the army medical corps. Before leaving for three years of duty in the Pacific, Dr. Warshauer married Miriam Miller, also of Wilmington. This past May they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary. Upon his return to the US in 1945, he completed his medical boards and re-opened his medical practice in Wilmington, a career that he devoted himself to for the next 42 years. He later became one of the first board certified specialists in cardiology. He served as president of the Wilmington Medical Society, chief of staff of James Walker Memorial Hospital and also New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He also practiced at Community Hospital and was a founder and first treasurer and later president of the North Carolina Society of Internal Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Known for his keen sense of humor, he was a master of quips. This talent was evident even when he was in high school when he and a friend began a popular cartoon publication; his friend created the drawings and he wrote the captions. He enjoyed playing bridge and golf, often with his wife, Miriam and his good friend Dr. Ralph Moore. He achieved the status of Gold Life Master of the American Contract Bridge League. He played golf well into his 80s and enjoyed both the game and the companionship. He served as president and assumed other leadership roles at the Temple of Israel and was the longest living member of the Wilmington Rotary Club. He loved to travel and after his retirement visited many parts of the world. The family is indebted to his faithful caregivers, led by Jean Brinson who also cared for his late mother and wife as well as other family members over the last 25 years. He is survived by his three children Sarah (Bob) Freedman of Palo Alto, California, Meira Maxine (Sam Baker) Warshauer of Columbia, South Carolina, and Ed Warshauer of Berkeley, California; four grandchildren, Rachel (Carl) Berg, Hannah (Yehoshua) Levine, Esther (Jordan) Bleicher, and Gabriel Warshauer-Baker; and 8 great-grandchildren, Emma, Eric, Adam, and Alex Berg; Chaya-Mushka, Pessy, and Rivka Levine; and Leo Bleicher. He also is survived by his sister Joan (Maurice) Fox of Charleston, SC, his sister-in-law Elaine Warshauer and many beloved nieces and nephews, one of whom was his caring physician, Leo Warshauer. He was pre-deceased by his two younger brothers, Judge Bernard J. Warshauer of Sumter, SC, and Dr. Albert D. Warshauer of Wilmington. The funeral service will be held at noon, Friday, August 2, 2013 at the Temple of Israel, 1 S. 4th St., Wilmington. Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Mr. George Diab, General James Lee, Dr. Ralph Moore, Dr. William Weinel and Dr. Ben Yue. Active pallbearers will be Mr. Charles Fox, Dr. David Warshauer, Mr. Gabriel Warshauer, Dr. Leo Warshauer, Mr. Michael Warshauer and Mr. Tom Warshauer. Memorial services will be held Sunday through Wednesday, August 4-7, 7p.m. at the Islander, 1704 N. Lumina Ave., Wrightsville Beach, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Samuel and Miriam Warshauer Memorial Fund, Temple of Israel, PO Box 4022, Wilmington, NC 28406. We all have such good memories of Uncle Sam and Aunt Miriam--a great patriarch and a great matriarch of the Warshauer family. I always appreciated Uncle Sam's witty sense of humor and his insights, and respected Aunt Miriam's forthright manner, her dedication to music and her independence. We'll miss them. Regards and love to Sarah and Bob, Meira and Sam, Edward and all the family.

Dr. Samuel Warshauer was truly a remarkable gentleman and it was indeed a real pleasure knowing him at the many concerts and musical gatherings here in Wilmington. May he rest in peace with his beloved wife Muriel who surely awaits him. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to all of the Warshauer family and especially to our good Dr.Leo Warshauer.

I wish I had known Dr. Warshauer was still alive when I heard his wife had died. My mother, Clara B. Melvin worked for him until she died in 1956 and he was truly someone to be admired and was so good to her. I will always appreciate his kindness and my mother never had anything but praise for him.

Sarah, Maxine, and Ed -- Just learned today from Martha Stein of the passing of both your mother and father. They were the last surviving members, or close to it, of the generation that include my father and mother. It is, of course, a sad occasion, but they lived long and happy lives, and I know you'll always cherish the memories. I have fond memories of both of them too.
