Dr. Samuel Dwane Thomas, M.D. CHARLESTON - Dr. Samuel Dwane Thomas M.D., born on August 24, 1934 in Randolph County, Arkansas, passed away at age 84 on November 22, 2018, in Charleston, South Carolina. Dr. Thomas graduated from Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, with an MD in 1967. He served in the U. S. Army active duty from 1955 to 1958 and inactive duty from 1958 to 1962 with an honorable discharge. He also served in the Officer Corps of the USPHS active duty from 1967 to 1968 with an honorable discharge. In addition to his private practice, he was on the staff of Roper Hospital, St. Francis Xavier Hospital, Baker Hospital, Trident Hospital, East Cooper Hospital, Johnson VA Medical Center, and Medical University of South Carolina until he retired in 1998. Dr. Thomas was the Chairman of the Urology Section at St. Francis Xavier Hospital from 1982 to 1985. His professional memberships included American Urological Association, Southeastern Section - American Urological Association, South Carolina Urological Association, Carolina Urological Association, South Carolina State Medical Society, Medical Society of South Carolina, Charleston County Medical Society, and Medical-Chirurgical Society of SC (past president). He was a member of the Charleston Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Dr. Thomas was on a committee that worked on the restoration of the organ at the Citadel Summerall Chapel. Passionate supporter of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, he purchased new timpani in 2002, and in 2015 he gave the CSO a restored Steinway concert grand piano.
