Samuel Carlton Obituary

Samuel Cail Carlton JOHNS ISLAND - Samuel Cail Carlton, 64, of Johns Island, South Carolina, husband of Elizabeth B. Carlton, entered into eternal rest on Friday June 16, 2023. Sam was born on July 17, 1958, in Atlanta, Georgia, son of Frank and Huldah Carlton. He graduated from Savannah Country Day in 1976 and Clemson University in 1980. He obtained a master's degree in Farm and Ranch Management at Texas Christian University. He then pursued a master's degree from the University of Georgia in Forestry, which would become his lifelong passion. Sam loved the outdoors from a young age. He grew up hunting and fishing on his grandmother's farm in Sylvania, Georgia, and became an avid conservationist, ultimately joining the board of the Lowcountry Land Trust to help protect the land and waters he loved so much. In his role as a partner at American Forestry Management, he was a treasured mentor to many. Sam was a kind and gentle soul. He radiated warmth and tenderness, and he always made others feel valued in his presence. He was the kind of man who didn't say much, but when he spoke everyone listened. He was highly respected and beloved by everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. He played soccer at Clemson and enjoyed coaching both his daughters in the sport. He fished the waters of the Lowcountry for red fish and cherished his annual bonefishing trip to South Andros in the Bahamas with his friends. But what Sam loved most of all was his family. He adored his loving wife, Elizabeth, of 36 years. He was a wonderful father to his two daughters, Isabel and Sarah, who were the lights of his life. He cherished being Poppy to his to grandchildren, Amizetta and Sam. He loved fishing with Sam and playing bucking broncos in the ocean with Amizetta. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of Johns Island, SC; daughter, Isabel and her wife, Amizetta, of St. Helena, CA; daughter, Sarah and her husband, Ryan, of St. John USVI; parents, Frank and Huldah Carlton of Savannah, GA; two brothers, Frank and Ben Carlton of Savannah, GA; sister, Debby Wallace and her husband, John, of Charlotte, NC; and a loving extended family. Memorials may be made to Lowcountry Land Trust: 635 Rutledge Avenue Suite 107, Charleston, SC 29403. There will be a visitation at the family home on Thursday June 22, 2023, from 4-6pm for family and friends. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. So very sorry to hear this news. Sam was a cool cat in High School. My sympathy to his brothers and his sister, Debbie. And of course, to his parents.

I am so very saddened and extend my heartfelt hope to the family that they be strengthened to endure this tragic loss. Sam was my friend. He had, in my opinion, a humility about him, an authenticity seldom found these days. He had my trust in now there´s an empty place, a debt, that I will try to satisfy with more kindness toward others.

My condolences to the family and friends of Sam. I worked in accounting at American Forest Management. When Sam came to Charlotte for meetings he was always so kind and would always speak and ask me how I was doing. He was truly a kind person and he will be missed.

Sam was a good friend from high school. He is the one who introduced me to soccer in 9th grade and we commanded the center of the soccer field as halfbacks. He was indefatigable...never ran out of gas like the rest of us! My sincere condolences to all of the Carltons. Malcolm Butler SCDS class of 76

I am so sorry for your loss. Sam was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother and son. He was also a true friend to so many. It was such a pleasure and joy for me to get to know Sam. Our time in Andros chasing bonefish over these last 15 years was the highlight of my year. Sharing the day on a flats boat with Sam was always a delight. The conversation was always about family and it was clear that there was nothing more important to him than his family. He always lit up when he talked about Elizabeth, Sarah and Isabel and more recently it was fun to see him beaming with joy when the conversation turned to his two grandchildren.
Sam was a true gentleman. He was humble and respectful to all and he was a beautiful fly fisherman with a graceful fly cast. It was fun to watch his intensity when he had his sights on a big fish.
Sam was a true friend whom I loved very much. I will never pick up a fly rod or step onto a bonefish flat without remembering him. We will all miss him very much, but be thankful for so many great memories.

Elizabeth, Isabel, Sarah, et al,
I'd like to offer my sincere condolences for this devastating loss.

I have been fortunate enough to work with Sam for the last 10 years. Working with Sam over those 10 years, we developed a friendship as we shared many interests and opinions. I will sorely miss my friendship with Sam and working with him. He will never be forgotten.

Let us all remember how lucky we've been to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you. May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.

While on the Board of the Lowcountry Land Trust, Sam generously shared his vast knowledge of forestry practices, which was invaluable in working with LLT's easement donors. He would always take time to help out, and his opinions were highly valued. HIs work made a real difference in conservation here in the Lowcountry. He will be sorely missed. My sincerest condolences to his family, a wonderful man gone far too soon.

I had the privilege of working with Sam for almost 23 years. I always enjoyed talking with him, most often about our daughters and soccer. He was a kind man who will be missed by many. Thinking of your family during this difficult time.

I will miss Sam. I always enjoyed catching up with him at company meetings. When we were both first hired at Shaw, McLeod, Belser and Hurlbutt we spent many hours working together in the woods. He was indeed a kind soul. Proud to have known him and consider him my Wood's Brother.
