Samuel Brockington Obituary

Samuel Keels Brockington, Sr. LAKE CITY, SC - Mr. Samuel Keels Brockington, Sr., 85, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 21st, 2011. Mr. Brockington was born on June 16th, 1925, in Charleston. He was the last of six children of the late Samuel Keels Brockington and the late Ester Jane Harper Gordon Brockington, and was the widower of the late Freddie Flowers Brockington. Mr. Brockington grew up in Kingstree, graduating from Kingstree High School in 1943. After graduating, Mr. Brockington was the forth son in his family to join the military and fight in World War II. He joined the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Goodhue as a Radarsman in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Brockington saw extensive combat action, most specifically in the Philippines. His ship was attacked and by a kamikaze, and sustained heavy casualties. After the war, Mr. Brockington attended and graduated from Temple University and Eckles School of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia. From there, he moved to Lake City in 1951. That year, Mr. Brockington started Brockington Funeral Home. His career spanned over sixty years of helping Lake City and its surrounding communities. Mr. Brockington's funeral home is now run by his son, Sam, and his grandson, Aaron. He was also very active in his community, which stemmed from his desire to help and give back to those around him. Mr. Brockington was a member of Lake City Fire Department, and was the Charter President of Lake City Rural Fire Department, which evolved into South Lynches Fire Department. He, too, was a founder of the Lake City Rescue Squad. Mr. Brockington served on the Lake City City Council for two terms, served as President of the Lake City Junior Commerce, as well as the Lake City Chamber of Commerce. He was very active in the Pee Dee Funeral Director's Association, serving as its Chairman, and was later elected to the Board of South Carolina Funeral Directors Association, later serving as its President, and served on the South Carolina Board of Funeral Service. Mr. Brockington was a Past-President of the Lake City Rotary Club, where he had been a member for over forty years, and was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Lake City Lodge #193 A.F.M for over fifty years, was very active in the local chapter of the American Red Cross, served as head of the local Civil Defense during the 1960's, and was a member of the Mortuary Response Team for the state of South Carolina. Mr. Brockington was a very avid fisherman, be it in on the creeks and beaches of Pawley's Island, Lynches River, or just a local farm pond. He loved to travel - most especially to his Navy ship reunions across the country. Mr. Brockington was a member of Lake City United Methodist Church for over sixty years, having served in many capacities, to include Chairman of the Building Committee during the churches major restoration. Mr. Brockington's greatest love was his family. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, be it cooking, playing at the beach, or fishing. Mr. Brockington loved serving his community as an undertaker, fireman, and friend. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him. The family would like to extend a special "thank-you" to caregivers Roy Lee McKenzie and Mellissa Battle, to Dr. Danny DeCamps, and to the Lake City Hospital and staff for their sincere desire to help and their personal, compassionate care shown to Mr. Brockington during his times of need. Words are not enough to express the gratitude felt by Mr. Brockington's family for all that was done. Mr. Brockington's surviving family includes his two children, Samuel Keels Brockington, Jr. (Nancy), of Lake City, and Jane Brockington Harrell (Floyd), of Lake City; his seven grandchildren, Bess Brockington Bluestein (Brett), of Charleston, S. Aaron Brockington (Ashley), of Lake City, Annalise Brockington, of Salt Lake City, Utah, Edward Brockington, of New York, New York, Eleanor Brockington, of Charleston, Emily G. Harrell, of Lake City, and Wesley B. Harrell, of Lake City. Mr. Brockington is preceded in death by his siblings, Mary Lee B. Stewart, Dr. William S. Brockington, Paul E. Brockington, John David Brockington, and Gordon B. Jenkinson. The family of Mr. Brockington will have visitation from five until seven o'clock p.m., tonight, Sunday, April 24th, 2011, in the funeral home. Funeral services for Mr. Brockington will be held at eleven o'clock a.m., Monday, April 25th, 2011, in the Lake City United Methodist Church. Burial will follow the funeral services in the Lake City Cemetery. Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge. Visit our guestbook at www.postandcourier.com/ deaths

Sam and Family,
Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time. Your dad was certainly a man among men. He always had a handshake/hug and a smile for everyone he encountered. And of course, such a great mentor to the firemen. He's certainly left behind a wonderful legacy that every member of his family can be proud of.

Mr. Sam, Aaron, and family,
Mr Keels was one of the best men in Lake City and there will never be another like him.He was truly one of a kind. He always had a kind word to say or a funny joke to tell. He had a kindred comforting spirit about him. and I have never seen him without a smile on his face. He never changed. My mom often speaks of the kind words he said to her when my grandfather passed away and when her cousin whom she was very close to passed away. Not only is this such a great loss to his close friends and family but, to the community as well because, Mr Keels made you feel like family. He made an impact on every person he met and every life he touched. My heart goes out to you and I'll be praying for your family.

Our prayers and thoughts are with you during this time of grief. Mr. Keels will surely be missed by all. He was a pleasant man to be around and always had kind words to give you. He loved to make you laugh. I've known Mr. Keels every since my dad (DC McGee) joined the fire department. Now my son Brandon is a junior. Mr. Keels made a great impact on their lives. He is in Heaven now rejoicing. May God comfort all of you and know that one day we can see him again.

I was deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Keels. He was a friend and confident of many things to me. Keels always had the right word, gesture, hug and smile for the people he met, he was gracious in his personal affairs as well as his devotion to his community. He served the people with love and compassion, with dignity and respect for all. He did not make any distinction between rich or poor. Keels was a man for all men. Lower Florence County was his home, the place where he devoted his unending love, time and service for the betterment of all. Keels was a leader of men. I will miss his smile, his hug, his handshake, and his caring attitude. Thanks for the memories and service to all. Rest in peace my friend, rest in peace.
