To The Family of Samantha Cawthorne:
I would like to extend my prayers to you as you mourn her passing.
My son, Stephen Perry, graduated from North Augusta High School with Samantha in June 2006, so when I heard the news I was truly devastated. I remember the achievements and awards she received, and as I did with Stephen, I was overjoyed! I cannot desribe in words yur loss; but, please know you are in my prayers.

Sam was an REU student in my research group last summer. She was a delight in and out of the research lab. So energetic, enthusiastic, and full of fun. Words fail to describe a loss such as this.

Sam was the first REU student I met when I arrived at Pullman. We rode from the airport together and she was super nice to me. Sam was so friendly and welcoming, even though she had a much longer flight and had to be up earlier than I. When we said our good-byes in August, I secretly hoped that I could bug her about the physics GRE when I was studying for it. Sam was an awesome person to be around and there are no words to express the sadness of losing her.

I didn't know Samantha very well, she was one of my favorite regulars at the coffee shop I worked at a year ago. Even after a year, I still remember the way she made a long night at work more bearable. That fact lets me know how hard it must be for people who knew her better than I did. I'm so sorry.

Mr. and Mrs. Cawthorne, Zach and Becca,
I only met Sam a few times but she was truely an amazing person. Just remember that God must have needed her for a higher purpose elsewhere or he wouldn't have taken her so suddenly from this life. I love you all and only wish I was there to help you all through this difficult time in everyone's life. As someone once said (no I don't know who but it's a good quote), this, too, shall pass.
love always,
Maddie Lopez

Dear Cawthornes,
Samantha was a brilliant girl with a beautiful mind and spirit - but I'm sure you knew that. She was in the middle of a book recently that had some interesting ideas on the nature of the soul and on how we can live on through our impressions and imprints in the minds of others. I'd like to think that she'll live on for a long time in this way through all those she touched. I'm so sorry for your loss.
