Dear Margie, Sammy, Theresa, Lynn and Randy: I just learned of Sam's passing in the Lexington Dispatch today. I called Margaret to confirm that it was the Sam that I knew. Sam was a great guy and fellow coach in the Lexington Rec Leagues. Margie your family has always been special to me. You working with me in real estate and our kids growing up together. Sam always reminded me a bit of a James Bond, or Edward Woodward, The Equalizer. I will miss him. We have a mutual friend, Phil Watkins, who worked with Sam at SLED. Phil told me some great stories about him, Sam and Ted Reed, who I also knew. I don't know if you know it but I lost Claudia to cancer December 30th, of last year. Please call me sometime when you feel like it.

Love, George, Lisha, Billy & Jeff

Mrs. Frierson, I am truly sorry for your loss. Sam was and will always be a good man... I grew up running the halls @ SLED and Sam always had time for me from shooting breeze to checking out bloodhounds and getting to sit with them on field during USC games whenever him and Ted were on protection detail was a pretty cool thing to do! Not only does your family feel the loss of a great man, the SLED family does too. Again my condolences to you and the family.

Margie and family,
Words are hard to come by when we're trying to console a family in the loss of their loved one. Know that some of my fondest memories were during the times we were playing ball together in high school. Sammy will continue to be in our Fond Memories Book and with Sammy you never have to use the last name. There's only one Sammy in our book!

Our condolences and prayers to the Frierson family.

Sam was the funniest man I ever met!!! He made EVERYONE howl with laughter .... Especially when he mimicked Chief Stom!!

He also provided sage advice regarding the 'internals' of SLED. He was spot on....

There will not be another Sam.

Margie and Family,

Please know that Sam was a trusted and long time friend. He learned well from his father and brought those attributes to his law enforcement career. You always knew Sam had your back. He was athletic- I think we were playing Conway in 1960. The play was option left. Our senior QB, Sammy Frierson, took the snap, faked the pitch to Denny, then blasted up field for a touchdown. With Sammy's score and a safe lead, Coach Finkelstein put some of us sophomore benchwarmers in—even me!

He was funny- Later that season, he suffered a leg injury and couldn't play. On crutches, and hobbling around the Rivers schoolyard at lunchtime, someone said, “Sammy, who's playing for you?” Sammy said, “Nobody. With me out, they had to cancel the rest of the games!” One of my classmates turned to me and said, “Sammy Frierson is the classic American Boy!”

Yes! And he became the classic American man. That's how I will remember Sammy Frierson.

My Dear Margie and Family,

I am lost for words, as I cannot believe Sam is gone. He always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. When I close my eyes, I find myself and the gang out in the front of Rivers. Oh those memories, and the reunions, as Hank could never understand a word Sam said. I will miss him forever. Now he will be free of pain. I grieve for your family and most of all you, Margie.

Hank and I send our love. May God bless all of you.
