Sakamuri V. He was 59. A distinguished researcher on Paget's disease of the bone and related diseases, Dr. Reddy's specialty was osteoclast biology and skeletal disorders. Teaching gave his life added purpose in that he treasured seeing young people-from undergrads to postdoctoral fellows-blossom with excitement as they progressed in their knowledge and understanding. One of six children, Dr. Reddy was born in 1961 in Atmakur, Kurnool, India to Eswaramma and Sri Lingaiah. He obtained his PhD in Biochemistry from Sri Venkateshwara University (SVU) in 1988. He then joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) as a postdoctoral fellow and advanced to the rank of Associate Professor in the department of Medicine/Hematology. He continued his career in these specialties as an Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh before joining the Darby Children's Research Institute as a Professor at Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in July 2004. Using both space flight and ground-based experiments, Dr. Reddy, along with researchers throughout the nation, worked with NASA's Microgravity Research Program to increase understanding of the effects of gravity on the body. Dr. Reddy published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and served as an editor on a recent book on advances in Paget's disease. He won awards ranging from a Paget's Foundation Award from the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) to a Department of Defense (DOD) Medical Research Award. Dr. Reddy is survived by his beloved son, Sashank Sakamuri; his mother, Eswaramma, two brothers, three sisters, and two nieces and nephews. I just learned of Dr. Reddy's passing, and just want Sashank to know how great his father was. Dr. Reddy was one of the greatest mentors to me of my life. I was placed in his lab in 2012 when I was in high school, and he taught me so well that I won first place on my poster in the undergrad devision. He encouraged me to pursue medicine. But he was also a teacher of life. I came back to MUSC for several years and it would make my day to run into him in front of the library or in the cafeteria, always stopping to chat. He cared deeply about everyone. Sashank, the last time I bumped into him, he was asking for advice on your next career steps, as they were shaping to be similar to mine. We've never met, but if I can ever help in any way, or you'd just like to hear a story, please don't hesitate to reach out.

I just learned of Dr. Reddy´s passing and I´m so sorry that he is gone. I met Dr. Reddy in 2007 when I first started at MUSC and he was always so kind and helpful to me and everyone around him. He contributed so much to our scientific knowledge and it´s great loss to the scientific community. I will really miss running into him in the halls at MUSC, and having a nice chat. Sending my sincerest sympathies to his family and friends.

I am associated very closely with Dr. Reddy when we both were PhD students in same lab. He is very friendly, simple and intelligent hard worker. I express my heartfelt condolences to his family.

Dr. Reddy was a tremendously kind individual who was among the first to welcome me when I joined MUSC over two years ago. He was someone I was advised to seek out before I came. I appreciated the help, advice and friendship that he provided me until his passing. He was also a great mentor not only to his own students and trainees but to my students and post-docs. He will be missed by myself and many others. His kindness and desire to help was central to his character. He was a well respected researcher with a strong national and International reputation. I want to make sure his family knows how much he contributed to science and medicine on both the technical research and human sides.

Sincerely

Dave Hill
