Sadie Miller Obituary

Sadie Lee Harmon Baynard Miller LEXINGTON, SC - Sadie Lee Miller, 85, of Lexington went to be with the Lord on April 27, 2010. Sadie Lee was born in Lexington, S.C. on June 29, 1924 and raised on Hendrix Street by her parents, Hollie Lee and Sadie Timmerman Harmon, along with siblings Betsy and Buck. After graduation from Lexington High School, she attended Winthrop College until she met Lt. James Swinton Baynard of New York, under the clock outside Sylvan's Jewelry Store. They married on her 19th birthday and moved to West Point where Lt. Baynard was a flight instructor. Sadie Lee and family returned south in 1951 and eventually settled in a house they built in the pecan grove behind her childhood home. She joined the family business, H. L. Harmon insurance Agency and became active in the business and community affairs of Lexington. She was the first woman elected to the board of the Lexington County Chamber of Commerce. She was a former treasurer of the American Cancer Society, a member of the DAR, American Legion Aux. Post 7, Literary Club and secretary of the committee that formed the Babcock Center in Lexington County. She was an avid bridge player and traveler. Her first love was the Lord Jesus Christ. She was a very active member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church having served as president of the WELCA and was a member of the Sunday School and Friendship Circle. She was widowed in 1968. In the 70's she met and eventually married Ray Stuart Miller, a local businessman combining her three girls and his three sons into their version of the Brady Bunch, the "Miller Mob" She is survived by her sister, Betsy Ellison, sister-in-law, Rebecca Harmon, three daughters, Elizabeth Baynard of Lexington, Susan and son-in-law, Ken Crabb of Asheville, NC and Jane Wingard and son-in-law, Martin Hayes of Annapolis, MD and two of Mr. Miller's three sons, Stanley and Donna Miller of Lexington, Ray Miller of Sunset Beach, NC and daughter-in-law, Monica Miller of Calabash, NC, widow of Mr. Miller's son, Charles. Mrs. Miller is also survived by a multitude of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Sadie Lee adored her family and annually spent a week at Folly Beach with as many of her brood as was available. Always looking for ways to help others, it was her desire to donate her body to University of South Carolina Medical Center for medical research. The family appreciates all of the care their mother received during her illness. The family is especially grateful for Dr. Christopher Wicker, Faye Kaiser, who periodically helped take care of Mother during the last three years and for Catherine Spencer who was a constant shoulder and source of comfort for Sadie Lee's daughters during the final weeks. Her memorial service will be on Sunday, May 2, 2010, at 2 p.m. at St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Lexington, with visitation following at the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Stephens Lutheran Church, 119 N. Susan, I was so sorry to hear about the passing of your Mom. She sounded like a wonderful lady. I am so glad that you got to spend some time with her at the end. You have been a wonderful daughter to her. You are my thoughts and prayers.

Susan and Ken:
