Sadie Herndon Obituary

HERNDON, Sadie Sadie Elizabeth Thigpen Hart Herndon entered into eternal rest at her home on James Island, SC surrounded by her loving family on Mother's Day, May 8, 2005. Mrs. Herndon was born on July 27, 1910 in Charleston, SC and was the daughter of the late Walter and Ethel Thigpen. She was the widow of John Hart and James Grady Herndon, Sr. After raising her children in downtown Charleston, she resided on John's Island for most of her later years. When growing up, she resided in both the Charleston Orphan Home and Catholic Orphanage. In the early years, Sadie enjoyed playing ball with her children and dancing "The Charleston." Family and neighbors could depend on her to act as midwife to many births during her child-bearing years. In her later years, Sadie's neighbors knew that they could depend on her to be a guardian to them and their children. She will be sadly missed by all. Mrs. Herndon is survived by six daughters, Ethel (David) Castellanos of Modesto, CA, Mildred (Charles) Tisdale of Charleston, SC, Rhoda (Jerry) Haynes of North Charleston, SC, Nancy (Jackie) Moore of Yamassee, SC, Miriam (James) White of Charleston, SC, and Sadie Mae (Glenn) Cook of Goose Creek, SC; three sons, Robert Michael (Peggy) Hart, Sr. of Charleston, SC, James Grady (JG) (Faye) Herndon, Jr., of Summerville, SC, and Eugene (Ida) Lane of Walterboro, SC; and two daughters-in-law, Miriam Hart Hazelmyer and Lorene Hart. Mrs. Herndon also leaves 42 grandchildren, three deceased; 63 great-grandchildren, two deceased; and four great-great-grandchildren.
