Ruth Townsend Obituary

Ruth Townsend MT. PLEASANT - Ruth Elliott Townsend, born on July 14, 1918 in Horry County, SC, died on Monday, April 28, in Mount Pleasant. She was the daughter of Bright Lewis and Hosea M. Elliott and was married to Wade Hampton Townsend for 45 years. She graduated from Winthrop College in 1938. Later she attended Columbia University in New York City, graduating with a Masters in Social Work in 1944. She returned to her beloved South Carolina in 1945 to raise a family in Mullins, SC. Ruth worked as a social worker for 40 years, dedicating her career to child social services and welfare. She was devoted to numerous social causes throughout her lifetime. She retired in 1981 and later moved to Mount Pleasant, SC to be closer to her grandsons. She continued her dedication to children after retirement, volunteering at Laing Middle and Wando High School. She also enjoyed playing bridge and continued playing with her group weekly until she was 94. She enjoyed the many friendships she established throughout her lifetime. She will be remembered for her civility and southern charm. She was predeceased by her husband, Wade Hampton Townsend; and son, Wade Hampton Townsend, Jr. and is survived by her daughter, Alice Townsend Pearson; grandchildren Alexis and Gus Pearson and Tyler and John Townsend Cooper; and great-grandchildren Elliott Kate, John Reid , Pope, and Wade Cooper. Also surviving are her brother, Forrest Elliott, her sister Arlene Jackson as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wildlife Action in Mullins.
