Ruth Harris Obituary

Ruth Horowitz Harris WALTERBORO - Ruth Horowitz Harris, 106 passed away Sunday, June 22, 2014 peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Born November 26, 1907 in Portsmouth, Virginia she was the daughter of the late Abraham Saul Horowitz and Fanny Horowitz Barney and the stepdaughter of Max Barney. Ruth was the oldest of four children and adored her brothers Irving, Meyer and Vernon. She grew up in downtown Charleston, SC. She attended Memminger High School and was a proud Alumna of The College of Charleston. She worked in the family business, Horowitz Jewelers on King St. On March 9, 1930 she married the love of her life Abram "Abe" Harris. They lived in High Point, NC until 1941 when they decided to make Walterboro, SC their home. Ruth and Abe along with Ruth's brother Meyer Horowitz established Hayes Jewelers on Washington St. in Walterboro. Ruth and Abe worked side by side until his passing. Ruth continued to work at Hayes Jewelers until the age of 96. Ruth was a member of Temple Mount Sinai, Sisterhood, and Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by her son, Lewis Harris (Arlene) of Walterboro, SC; a daughter, Cecile "Cissy" Rosenberg (Raymond) of Stone Mountain, GA; four grandchildren: Beth Harris Veyber (Mikhail) of Charleston, SC; Amy Harris Gelfand (Aaron) of Round Rock, TX; Dara Rosenberg Igershiem (Daniel) of Washington, DC; Charles Rosenberg of Atlanta, GA; three great-grandchildren: Alexis Mae Veyber and Gregory Raymond Veyber of Charleston, SC and Abram "Bram" Jacob Igershiem of Washington, DC. Mrs. Harris was predeceased by an infant son, her husband, parents and brothers. The Harris family wishes to express thank you to Willie Mae, Tasca, Ann, Edna, and Ruby for the gracious care given to Ruth over the past years. Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 11:30 in the Live Oak Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either Temple Mt. Sinai, P.O.B. 516, Walterboro, SC 29488, or to the Colleton County Literacy Council, 609 Black Street, Walterboro, SC 29488. Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home of Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
