Ruth DeTreville Obituary

Ruth Kasell DeTreville Charleston - Ruth Alberta "Bertie" Kasell DeTreville entered into eternal rest peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Friday, January 8, 2021. Bertie was born on August 4, 1924 in Horatio, South Carolina, the 4th of 7 children born to Benjamin F. Kasell and Mamie Parnell Kasell. She graduated from Hillcrest High School in Sumter County. Bertie married James P. DeTreville Sr. on June 30, 1946, and followed him through his Army career until an overseas assignment and the birth of their only child coincided and caused the young family to move to Charleston to be closer to her parents. She and her husband were members of the Lutheran Church, but attended Ashley River Baptist Church for many years after their move to Charleston. Bertie was a homemaker and happily so. After her husband's death, she moved to the Canterbury House, where she enjoyed a number of years of friendship and fellowship. She spent her final year living with her son and daughter-in-law, impatient with the constraints of the pandemic and in declining health. She especially enjoyed her first mail-in vote in November. Bertie was predeceased by her parents and all of her siblings: Frank Kasell Jr., Mary K. Vaughn, Thelma K. Dixon, Thomas Kasell, Bobby A. Kasell, and Bill Kasell. She is survived by her beloved son, James P. DeTreville, Jr., and by her daughter-in-law, Patricia O. DeTreville, as well as 3 grandchildren: J. Michael DeTreville, Lauren E. DeTreville, and Emilie G. DeTreville, and by 2 great-grandchildren (Michael's children), Isla E. DeTreville and Ellis DeTreville, as well as by a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
