June 12, 2007

Sallie & family- On behalf of all at Pet Helpers Animal Rescue Shelter
please accept our and my deepest sympathy in the loss of your incredible husband. I had the good forture to meet occassionally with
"Chief Roddy" to talk about animal welfare issues on the MP side of town; we often went on to talk about the animals we were involved with including you (with great pride and love), the horses, and other pets you have . I looked at pictures in his office. I last saw the Chief at a MT animal neglect hearing in court about 6 months ago; he said he was well and looked good. What positive attitude he had. I am just so so sorry for this too soon of a loss, certainly to you and the community as well. May God Bless and help you during this most difficult and painful time.
Sincerely,

Aunt Nita

It has been several years since I saw Roddy, but I kept up with him through mutual friends and co-workers. I served with him on the Charleston County Police Department, and I had a lot of respect for him, both as a co-worker and a friend. Rest in peace my friend. My deepest sympathy to the Perry Family.

Many years have passed since the "Old Perry Store", St. Paul's High School and close friends. However, those memories are vividly strong for many Edistonians whether they're living on Edisto Island or Edisto Beach any longer. If ever Edisto gets in your soul, it remains close to your heart forever. Roddy & I would cross paths occasionally. Once at a municipal meeting I teased him about the profession he had chosen. Of course he returned the tease because I also am in public service. To all of his family, you are deep in my thoughts. To Sallie and Rhonda, we're weeping with you today and look forward to seeing you at peace of heart soon.

Carol and I want to express our deepest sympathy. Roddy was one of the real friends I made when on Town Council (1998-2002). I always appreciated his counsel and friendship. We will miss him but always think fondly of him.
Best to you and the whole family.

To the Perry Family:
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sorrowful time. God's garden is truly a brighter place now. I had not seen Roddy for sometime but I knew that if I had needed something he would have done everything in his power to help because that was his way. I met Roddy back when he and my late husband (Steve Hiott) and he served together on the Charleston County Police. Roddy was Steve's Road Sgt. when Steve was killed in the line of duty in October 1982. Roddy was put back in the Detective Office to coordinate the investigation. I will never forget the long hours that he and Paul Hwakins put in on the case and then every day of the two trials that were forcoming, Roddy would pick me up at my home and take me to the Courthouse downtown. He sat with me and my family each and every day and made sure that we felt safe and he did whatever he could to make a bad situation a little easier for us. I only wish that I could do the same for his family now. Just take comfort in knowing that Roddy touched many lives during his time here and our community is a better place because he chose to serve. Please let me know if there is anything that I can do for you.
May God Bless and Comfort you and Roddy's police family now.

It was a time when law enforcement and "the press" did not get along, but after some mutual testing, Roddy and I forged a working relationship based on trust. We spent many hours in his cruiser or office, talking off-record about one case or another. He gave me a good lead every now in then, in return for having played "the game" straight, that being the contest to inform the public versus the development of investigative information. He knew I respected his efforts, and I believe he came to respect mine.
A few years later our daughters played volleyball for different schools, and I would see him at tournaments. Same old Roddy - friendly and witty. Those were good days back then, at CCPD and MPPD, and I will always respect the professionalism Roddy displayed at every turn.
Lord, a good one has come home.

I met Roddy in 1970 at the store on Edisto. He was a great asset to the community and helped with the health clinic --- now Sea Island. We had many contacts over the years and it was always a positive experience. The world needs more Roddy's! Rhonda, my thoughts are especially with you since I don't know the other family members.

Sallie,
You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Roddy and I were friends since the "old" Charleston County Police Department days. He was truly a southern gentleman, close friend, and an outstanding police officer. I fondly remember his congratulatory phone call to me when I was appointed Chief in Summerville. The law enforcement community has lost a super comrade and ally. God’s help and time will help ease the pain of his passing.
