Ronald Hanna Obituary

Ronald Edward Hanna, Sr. James Island - Ronald Edward Hanna Sr., 89, of James Island, SC, retired public school Principal and husband of Charlotte Rose Irwin Hanna, entered peacefully into eternal rest on Saturday, January 2, 2021, with his wife holding his hand. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald E. Hanna, Sr. are invited to attend his Funeral Service at 10:00 AM Saturday, January 9, 2021, at the Graveside, Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM Friday at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy., Charleston. Online Condolences may be offered at www.Charlestonfunerals.com. Ron was born on July 14, 1931, in New Kensington, Pennsylvania and raised by his grandmother, Martha Hanna. He graduated from New Kensington High School and attended Pennsylvania Military Preparatory College before attending The Citadel. Ron graduated from The Citadel in 1956 and was a member of the basketball team. After his sophomore year at The Citadel, he was inducted into the US Army. Ron was stationed at Camp Pickett, Virginia and then Fort Sam Houston, Texas, before receiving an early release to return to The Citadel to complete his BS in Physical Education. Ron also received a Master of Arts from Appalachian State University. He married the love of his life, Charlotte Irwin, on June 13, 1953. They shared 67 amazing years together and were blessed with 5 children, "Mr. Hanna" or "Coach Hanna" as he was affectionately known by his students, parents and colleagues was a longtime educator and coach in the Charleston area. He valued the importance of being a positive influence on young people and made that his life's purpose. Ron began his career in 1956 at Porter Military Academy teaching fifth/sixth grade and assisting in the athletic and military programs. He was the Basketball Coach for Bishop England High School in 1963 when they won their one and only Boys State Championship Title. He was an Assistant Principal at James Island High School for 2 years before becoming the Principal at Stiles Point Elementary School. He remained at Stiles Point Elementary School for 28 years until his retirement from the Charleston County School District. It was commonplace to see Mr. Hanna greeting his students by opening their car doors as they were dropped off at school. His love of education and enthusiasm for empowering his teachers and students to be their best was contagious. Mr. Hanna possessed that unique characteristic of making you believe that you could achieve anything. Even after retirement, Mr. Hanna continued his involvement in the school system assisting with the After School Program. In addition, he worked and volunteered at the James Island YMCA with the youth and adult recreational programs. He was a member of Nativity Catholic Church. He loved basketball and bowling and was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. In his later years, he loved traveling with Charlotte and spending time with his children and grandchildren. His amazing life and the impact it made on many will forever be cherished by his children: Ron Jr. (Kay) Hanna, William Hanna (deceased), Martha (Kevin) Burns, Lori (Rick) Campbell and Lillie (Peter) Aquino; sisters-in-law: Delores Wrenn and Shirley Hanlon; grandchildren: Ron Hanna III (Rachelle), Eric, Ryan & Ross Burns, Morgan & Hanna Campbell and Taylor, Kaitlyn & Sawyer Aquino and great-grandchildren: Kelsey & Kayley Burns and Liam Burns and numerous devoted nieces, nephews and cousins. Ron was preceded in death by his grandmother, Martha Hanna and his son, William John Hanna. I remember him from my early years at Stiles Point, he wasn't above coming out and playing football with us on the playground. I too just noticed that he passed and he will always be remembered for the positive influence he had on us "island boys".

Your family has been in my thoughts and prayers. I was unable to attend the services which broke my heart. Mr. Hanna was truly a remarkable person. My children grew in his presence as their principal. I had the pleasure of watching him in retirement still have a great influence to the next generations through the Kaleidoscope Program.

I remember Mr. Hanna as being one of the most caring and positive individuals I have had the pleasure to know. His love of children was so evident in his daily behaviors such as opening car doors , even in the rain, greeting students by their names, and sitting at lunch with children who were experiencing sadness. The world needs more individuals like Mr. Ron Hanna.

I was sorry to learn today of Ron's passing. I knew many years and played on several basketball teams with him. He was a fine man who I am proud to be able to say he was, and remember him as my friend. While we lost contact over the years as I moved around for business, I never forgot the good times, the great and positive attitude, and his love of serving his fellow human beings.

Uncle Ron was a rare soul. He was always smiling and cheerful. He made everyone feel like they were the most important person in the world when he talked to you. He has been an inspiration to everyone who has ever know him. He made you want to be better and to laugh at things when they go wrong because they will always get better. He will truly be missed. I'm sorry I can't be there, but I am always going to keep y'all in my prayers.

My deepest condolences to the Hanna family, his close friends, former students, and all who loved him and grieved his passing.
My youngest children attended Stiles Point Elementary in the late 1980's and they fondly recall Mr. Hanna's caring and approachable spirit. In fact, they still remember his cheerful, smiling face welcoming them into the school each morning.

While serving on the PTA board, SIT committee, and as a volunteer for various activities at Stiles Point, I frequently had the opportunity to interact with him. He was always sociable and warm. It was a pleasure to just be in his presence.

I will also miss seeing his face in and around James Island. We seem to typically run into each other at Walmart. I could count on a cheerful greeting and a friendly smile from him.

Both my children attended Stiles Point and I was so impressed with Mr. Hanna's kindness, friendliness, and infectious enthusiasm. He always met each child with a smile when he opened their car door, and even more amazing was that he knew all their names. He was a wonderful person and role model for the lucky children who attended his school.

I first knew Mr Hanna as my good friend Martha´s Dad . He was always smiling and welcoming , and was at every Fort Johnson High School game or event. Martha, I´m so very sorry for your loss. I know each of you will miss your Dad terribly. I later knew him well as the Principal at Stiles Point Elementary where both of my daughters attended. What a special soul he was, greeting the kids happily every morning on arrival and sending them off every afternoon as they departed. His smile was genuine as were his actions, he truly wanted the best for every single child. He poured his love and attention into Stiles Point. There were many of us parents back then who were really grieving and wondering how we could ever be as happy with our kids schools after experiencing Stiles Point!
My family will never forget such a kind, sweet genuine man.

"Capt." Hanna and I started at Porter in 1956: he as a new teacher; I as a 7th grader. He was pleasant and enthusiastic and I enjoyed his Phys. Ed class. In eighth grade, he taught us science.
From that class I remember only one incident. In illustrating some principle we weren't grasping, he finally tore a dollar bill in half. Always penniless, I was aghast. He made his point. Sixty years later, I reminded him of this. He didn't remember it. I remembered only that dollar.
The most meaningful lessons he taught me resonated when I became a teacher: treat your students with respect and friendliness and listen attentively when they tell you something.
I seldom saw Ron, but I knew he was in the world doing good. I am happy that I knew him and am deeply sorry we have lost him.
Lori, do you remember, "Lisa, Lisa, Lori, Lisa"?

There are not enough words to portray what a wonderful man Ron Hannah was. He always had a smile, remembered your name and just made you feel that you were important to him and that is a God given trait. He love God, Charlotte and family and I am so sorry you have lost this wonderful man , but you can find peace, knowing the heavenly rejoicing was tremendous when he walked through those gates for a job well done on earth. My thoughts and prayers are with you now and in the days to come. Find comfort in each other and the beautiful lifetime of love and memories you have. Mr. Ron was truly a great Man! His sweet, grandfatherly way and his nurturing, gentleness made for the PERFECT Principal. Someone who could care for THAT many children MUST have a huge heart! When I was at Stiles Point, I thought he was really nice! ( as was the case for probably MOST of James Island)! Being 10 years old, he reminded me of my Granddaddy, later I found out that we WERE family and I Always thought that was really neat. I am STILL proud to say that! He sent me a very nice condolence message when he found out that Daddy had passed (Gus Pontiff 2016). That really meant a lot because Daddy cared about him a lot. You are all loved dearly by everyone around so soak up the hundreds of well wishers and our memories. I pray that they comfort and cheer you throughout this terribly sad time and may you smile a little bigger or laugh a little bit harder when the stories, memories and love flood your minds instead of the sadness and pain. You may have lost your husband, father and granddad, BUT Heaven has gained an Angel who will always be there to watch over and protect you all. As the last remaining Pontiff, sending much love to you now and ALWAYS!!!
