Robert Zalkin Obituary


ZALKIN, Robert Mr. Robert M. Bob Zalkin, 80, died Monday, September 4, 2006 at his home with his family around him. A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 6 at the Hebrew Cemetery, Greensboro. Mr. Zalkin was a member of Beth David Synagogue for 49 years where he served as Sunday school teacher, led Minyon and was a member of the Chevra Kaddisha for 30 years. He was a former owner of Rosewood Hardware, Columbia, SC. He was also the owner of Virginia Carolina Sales, manager of Kuppenheimer Menswear, regional manager for Channel Master Corporation and was a small electric specialist for Sears's repairs. He was a wounded veteran of the US Army serving during World War II in Europe. Between battles he cleansed and rehabilitated synagogues in France for which he was cited in The Stars and Stripes. Mr. Zalkin served on the State Civil Defense Team in the 1950s and '60s during the cold war. He was a volunteer for Moses Cone Cardiac Rehabilitation. He was a member and contributor to the SC Jewish Heritage Society where he contributed photos and oral history of the Zalkin family. He also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. He was former president of the Glentower Homeowners Association. A member of the NC Wildlife Association, he was an avid fisherman and boatman having captained many ships. Mr. Zalkin was preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Joseph Zalkin, sisters, Lilly Bebergal, Helen Pont, brother, Irvin Zalkin, son-in-law, Gordon Brown and father and mother-in-law, Caba and Katie Rivkin. Mr. Zalkin is survived by his wife of 57 years, Harriett R. Zalkin of the home, daughter, Robin Zalkin Brown of Knoxville, TN, sons, Andrew D. Zalkin of Columbia, SC, Joseph R. Zalkin of Raleigh and many loving nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Beth David Synagogue, 804 Winview Dr., Greensboro, NC 27410 or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405. The family wishes to express a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Peter Rubin, nurse Amy Mitchell, Dr. David Grapey and all of the caregivers at home and from Hospice. Mrs. Zalkin, Robin, Andrew and Joseph, My sympathies to you all. Mr. Zalkin was very special me. He was such a pleasure to be around. (For the last 49 years) He always made me feel welcome and special. I will miss him on my visits to "Big G"

I was psychologist to the Cardiac Rehab. Program at the "Y" for 20 years. Bob was one of the first men I interviewed and was always a great person to be with and to visit with. Thank you for his presence in my life - and for a few suits I purchased, too!
