Robert Turner Obituary

Robert Turner, Jr. ISLE OF PALMS - Robert Kean Turner, Jr. died at the age of 85 of natural causes on Tuesday October 16, 2012 at his home on Isle of Palms, SC. His wife June was by his side. He was born to Robert Kean and Eunice Henderson Turner in Richmond VA on November 30, 1926. He was educated at the Virginia Military Institute and the University of Virginia where he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in English. He married Janet Gascoyne Bridges on August 21, 1948, and they remained a devoted couple through the sixty four years of their marriage. He served as an officer in the United States Navy in the Aleutian Islands during the waning months of World War II, and eventually retired as a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve. After teaching English at VMI for five years, he joined the Department of English at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1965, serving as chairman from 1967 - 1970. He became the General Editor of the Modern Language Association's New Variorum Shakespeare project in 1974. He supervised the editorial work and oversaw publication of over twenty Variorum volumes. He was a driving force in the creation of the Shakespeare Research Collection, a repository of rare editions and artifacts pertaining to Shakespeare's life at the Golda Meier Library at UWM. He was a respected researcher and teacher, and a prolific author. He edited numerous volumes of Shakespeare's plays, was a Guggenheim Fellow, and a grantee of the National Endowment for the Humanities. He retired as Professor Emeritus of English in 2001. He was an accomplished sailor, and, with his wife June, successfully raced Flying Scots at the Milwaukee Yacht Club for many years. Upon attaining a Flying Scot seasonal championship, he and his wife acquired a more stately sailing vessel and spent subsequent years happily cruising on Lake Michigan. He was respected as a Virginia gentleman of the old school, and was well regarded for his intellect, hospitality, wit, civility and readiness to be of help to family, students and colleagues. He is survived by his wife Janet Bridges Turner, a son Robert Kean Turner III, a daughter Janet Gascoyne Turner Crouch, two grandchildren John Baker Crouch IV and Janet Gascoyne Turner Crouch, and a great grandson, Drako Zander Machado. He was predeceased by a son, William John Gascoyne Turner in 1987. The family wishes to thank Ms. Sandra Dasburg for her devoted, kind and respectful care of our husband and father during his final months. Memorials may be made to the Preston Library through the Virginia Military Institute Foundation. "His life was gentle, and the elements so mixed in him, that Nature might stand up, and say to all the world, this was a man." Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

I had the opportunity to work with Professor Turner for 16 years, and I have nothing but good memories of my time with him. A wonderful advocate, Professor Turner cleared my way past many administrative hurdles, whether to allow me to take courses I desired or to get extensions to finish my dissertation. He challenged me but he demonstrated confidence in my abilities, and his confidence was the key for my completing the edition. A rare teacher, Turner took the only seat in the research room that we his conspiring students would leave open, from which he could not see the clock. That way, we were assured of more time with him in class, which would end only when Mrs. Turner would ring on the telephone. Professor Turner always expressed surprise at the passed time, but we were happy students who got so much more for our tuition. I have so many stories that I treasure, as does Mary Edge Blewett, who would express her sorrow to hear of his passing, if she could. Turner admired her work, and she his. Bob, you were a second father to me, and I miss you. June, thank you for your graciousness to me during the years I worked under Bob. Mary and I send our prayers, love, and condolences your way.

Bob hired me as a new colleague in early modern studies in 1989. He was gracious and supportive throughout our years together. Bob had read everything early modern, I am sure, and that breadth and depth of knowledge is so valuable and so rare.

Dr. Turner was such a lovely man, a gifted teacher, and gracious and generous to his students. Any student in his classes knows how lucky they were to have him share his knowledge and love of scholarship. As he quoted to us all, " No profit grows where no pleasure is taken. In brief, sir, study what you most affect."

I can do little but re-echo the praise for Bob Turner. But I would like to recall one incident. While working on his boat he had a freak accident which caused serious burns, happily leaving his face untouched. He faced up so bravely to the pain he must have suffered, that I found my visits to him in hospital more inspiring than distressing. He was always like that, calm, gracious, industrious. He will be sorely missed.

Bob was a gentle and generous man, a true scholar, and a steadfast friend for forty-five years. His contributions to UWM, its College of Letters and Science, and its English Department were enormous and essential to their development. His was a life well-lived. Our love to June, Janet, and Robert.
