Robert Snyder Obituary

Robert Snyder Mt. Pleasant - Robert Jackson Snyder, 89, husband of Claire Eagerton Snyder, died Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston. Born March 23, 1933 in St. George, he was a son of the late Claude M. Snyder and the late Irene Patrick Snyder. He was a US Navy veteran of the Korean War. At the age of 17, Bob made his profession of faith in Christ at a revival service held by the Orchid Avenue Baptist Church of Newport News, VA, where his family lived during his father's US Navy assignment there. Bob told of running home to tell his friends of his conversion and inviting them to come to the service the following night; they did go and also made professions of faith. Bob joined the US Navy during the Korean Conflict at the age of 17 with his mother's permission. He volunteered for submarine service and served aboard the USS Blenny 324. He received his GED while stationed in Japan. Following his Naval service from 1950 to 1954, he attended The Citadel and Baptist College (now Charleston Southern University). After working for the J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Home, Bob received his funeral director's license from Kentucky School of Funeral Directors and then operated Snyder Funeral Home for several years. Bob followed many career paths and faced many setbacks in his life but was a fighter and always got up from hard times to try again with the help of God, family and friends. He retired at the age of 81 from the Berkeley County Water and Sanitation Department located in Huger, SC, where he had become a friend to many. He was a proud member of the Holland Club of USSVI Charleston Base, Submarine Veterans of America, where he had many faithful friends. He is survived by his wife of 64 years of Mt. Pleasant; a son, James Edward "Jimmy" Snyder of Mt. Pleasant; sisters-in-law, Josephine "Jo" Wallace of Columbia and Caroline Waterbury of San Antonio, TX; and a number of dearly loved nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert Jackson "Jack" Snyder, Jr.; two brothers, William Lewis Patrick and John Edward Snyder; a sister, Frances Snyder Armstrong; and his grandparents, Augustus "Gus" Patrick and Olive Kennedy Patrick, with whom he lived when he was four years old while his mother spent many months in a tuberculosis sanatorium. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2022 in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with David Elliott officiating. Burial will follow in the Elliott Family Cemetery, 16111 Panola Road, Pinewood. Visitation will be held from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at Stephens Funeral Home. His family extends heartfelt thanks for the special and extended care and attention he received from Dr. Donald Eagerton of Myrtle Beach, Lisa Darling, RN, Home Health Nurse and the medical and nursing staff at Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Hospital, Clinic, ER, IR and the Liberty Hall Section of the hospital. Memorials may be made to Elliott Family Cemetery, c/o Miriam B. Johnson, 2430 Tearcoat Road, Alcolu, SC 29001. Stephens Funeral Home & Crematory, 304 N. Church Street, Manning, is in charge of arrangements, (803) 435-2179. www.stephensfuneralhome.org Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston

Dear Claire, family and friends of Bob,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Bob´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Blenny (SS-324).
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
Claire and family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).
Jim Sandman, FTC(SS) Ret,
National Chaplain, USSVI.
