Robert Scott Obituary

SCOTT, Robert COLUMBIA - Memorial service for Robert Joseph Scott, 81, will be held Sunday, March 22, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at DUNBAR FUNERAL HOME, DEVINE STREET CHAPEL. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Mr. Scott died Tuesday, March 10, 2009, in Columbia, S.C. He was born on March 22, 1927 in the Free City of Danzig on the coast of the Baltic Sea. He was the son of the late Mina Hochberg of Riga, Latvia and Abraham Hochberg of Poland. He is predeceased by brothers Issak, Heinz and Muritz Hochberg and sister, Freida Hochberg. Mr. Scott, his father and his brother, Issak, were the only family members to survive the Holocaust. After leaving Poland, he traveled to England where he attended school in Ely, Cambridgeshire, and at Kings College of Cambridge University, and served in the Royal Navy. In 1950, he arrived in the United States on the Queen Mary and in 1954 he became a United States citizen. Mr. Scott retired from the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant after serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was awarded a Bronze Star and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn A. Scott and three daughters, Judy Edwards and husband Billy Edwards, Janice Byars and husband Jack Carl Byars and Robie Scott and husband Matt Decell of Sullivan's Island, S.C., and grandchildren.
