Robert Samuel McCants III
Mt. Pleasant - Robert Samuel McCants III, 76, of Mount Pleasant, SC, peacefully transitioned from his earthly home to his heavenly home on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing.
Funeral services for Robert will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at 11:00 AM at East Cooper Baptist Church, 361 Egypt Road, Mount Pleasant, SC. Family and friends are invited to gather one hour prior to the service for visitation. The Reverend Conrad "Buster" Brown will be officiating the ceremony.
Born on November 18, 1949, in Orangeburg, SC, Robert was the beloved son of the late Robert Samuel McCants Jr. ("Rock") and Joan Mewborne McCants. He attended Orangeburg city schools, graduating from Orangeburg High School in 1968. During his time there, he distinguished himself as an outstanding leader, serving as President of the Student Body and earning many other honors such as governor of Boys State in 1967.
Robert continued his education at Clemson University, graduating in 1972. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity where he served as commander. A week after graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Tallulah Walter, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love and devotion.
While at Clemson, Robert joined the ROTC. He completed his U.S. Army training at Fort Bragg and served at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas (missile training). After marrying Tallulah, he continued his service in the Army Reserves for a brief period.
Robert's professional journey began at IBM, where he dedicated 38 years of his career. His work took his family across various states before settling in Mount Pleasant, SC, in 1986. Following his retirement from IBM, Robert became the headmaster at Palmetto Christian Academy and later served at East Cooper Baptist Church (ECBC), his home church. In these roles, he learned the true meaning of service and lived as a permanent servant for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Robert and Tallulah were blessed with four sons: Robert Samuel McCants IV (wife, Kimberly), Walter Allison McCants (wife Brooke), Thomas Braxton McCants (wife Maggie), and John Michael McCants (wife McRea). He is survived by his sister, Jan McCants McCall (husband Ron), and his brother, Carson Young "C.Y." McCants (wife Karen). Robert was preceded in death by his sister, Susan McCants Brant (husband Donald).
Robert's love for his family was boundless, and he was deeply cherished in return. He was affectionately known as "Pop" by his grandchildren: Anna Grace, Maddy, Samuel, Charlotte, Carson, Braxton, Lila Blue, Wyatt, and by his great-granddaughter, Hallie Ray, all of whom adored him.
Robert's life was marked by leadership, service, and unwavering faith. He touched countless lives as a husband, father, brother, grandfather, mentor, and friend. His legacy of love, devotion, and service will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
He will be dearly missed and forever remembered.

I attended Orangeburg High School and became immediately aware of Robert's Leadership abilities and his desire to serve in different ways . Later I witness his leadership at Clemson's Sigma Nu. Since I was 2 yrs younger ,I was an observer but felt the awe of this good young man and glad he was present in our time . He was also a "ROCK" Prayers of comfort for his Family.
