Robert McNab Obituary

Robert Francis McNab, Jr. Charleston - Robert Francis McNab, Jr., 97, of Charleston SC, died on January 15, 2021. He was the son of Robert Francis McNab and Margaret Viola Heustess McNab. He was born August 23, 1923 in Bennettsville, SC, and grew up in Charleston, SC. He was proud to be part of the McNab Scottish clan. He took great pride in serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then graduating from Clemson University with a degree in electrical engineering. He contributed to the SC textile industry with multiple patents for his engineering innovations in the field. He also worked for some time at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. Bob, as he was known to friends and family, had a wonderful life with over 50 years of marriage to his late wife Carolyn Grist McNab. They sailed the world in their boat Mystie and traveled extensively by train in Europe and the United States, and as a professional photographer, he always had a camera to document their adventures. Bob's proudest achievement was that of being a strong, independent man of integrity, and an always available loving father to his daughter Margaret "Peggy" Ruth McNab Gale (Larry) and his late son Robert F. McNab, III (Lynda). A widower for many years, he had many nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. He was especially close to his nieces Martha Blackwood and Mary Low (Stanley) who were caregivers that helped make it possible for him to live independently in his own home. He is also survived by his niece Sally Ellisor, his nephew Jimmy Long (Debbie), his nephew Mike Borke, (who watched over Dad living next to him), his nephew Jeff Borke (Kay) and his dear friends Anne and Billy Condon, who were also his neighbors in the Moreland subdivision. The elder care team from First Baptist Church of Charleston, pastored by Marshall Blalock and led by Joyce Tyler and Myrtice Guerry provided him with prayers, home visits, and his favorite homemade baked goods. Bob was very thankful to all his friends and relatives for making his life worth living, through times of celebration and loss. Bob and his daughter also want to thank her nephews Jonathan Heywood and Richard Heywood (Liz) for welcoming him in to their lives. Due to COVID, services will be private. Arrangements by Jr. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel. Memorials may be made to historic First Baptist Church in downtown Charleston, SC. Dear McNab Family,
I was so sorry this morning to hear that Bob had died. We moved to this neighborhood in 1973 (771, house at the fork in the road). I have fond memories of him and Carrie. I, too, love photography and we had many a chat about our favorite hobby. We would sometimes join them in their backyard to enjoy 4th of July fireworks. They were always so gracious and welcoming.
Our neighborhood will miss him as I know your family will.
You and he will be in my prayers. If I can do anything to help your family, please let me know.

Dear Peggy, Larry and Lynda,

Mr. McNab was so blessed to be able to stay in his home up until the last three weeks of his life, which was his desire. I know y'all and the rest of his family and friends will greatly miss him. We are praying that you have comfort and peace during this time. Peggy, I will always recall his quick wit when you and Larry brought him to our home for Thanksgiving dinner with my parents four years ago. He was blessed with a long life.

Blessings,
Carolyn Blue and Lee Mikell
