Robert McKenzie Obituary

Robert H. McKenzie, Jr. Mt. Pleasant - On Thursday, January 14, 2021, Robert H. McKenzie, Jr., husband to Barbara P. McKenzie, and father to Robert H. McKenzie, III, and Constance L.P. McKenzie (deceased), passed away at the age of 72 from a long battle with COPD. Due to the health and safety of all, services will be private at this time. A celebration of Bob's life will be held at a later date. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel. Bob was born on October 27, 1948, in Trenton, TN. He studied marketing at the University of Mississippi and horticulture at Trident Technical College. He was a certified nursery professional through the South Carolina Nurseryman's Association. The South Carolina & Landscape Association awarded him in 2005 the South Carolina Nursery Professional of the Year and in 2010 the Lifetime Fellow Award. Bob began his career in marketing but in the late 1980s he decided to try something different. Because he loved to play golf, he decided he wanted to become a greenskeeper and enrolled at Trident Tech to switch careers. After working at Wild Dunes, he moved into landscaping and then to nursery management/sales. This area is where he excelled. He loved the nursery business because he loved his customers and his fellow nursery men and women. He enjoyed helping others and many have said that Bob helped or trained them to become successful or advance in their careers. He was a wonderful and loving husband and an even more caring and fantastic father. He adored his two children (Bobby and Connie); they were his life. He was never too busy to play with them or take them on outings or trips. In high school, Bob made first chair percussionist in the state of Tennessee. He played with the Ole Miss marching band and in the 1970s played a few seasons with the Charleston Symphony. Bob is predeceased by his father, mother, and daughter: Robert H. McKenzie, Margaret Johnston McKenzie, and Constance L.P. McKenzie. He is survived by his wife, Barbara P. McKenzie, of 52 years of marriage; a son, Robert H. McKenzie, III, of Rock Hill, SC; sister, Ann Miller Smith, of Friendship, TN; and nephew, niece, and two great-nieces and one great- nephew. The family wishes to express much gratitude to Lutheran Hospice at Franke, especially his nurse, Krysta, and the MUSC medical team; Palliative Care, Pulmonology, and Internal Medicine, for the wonderful care they provided Bob. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to MUSC Pulmonology, https://giving.musc.edu/, Lutheran Hospice, 1885 Rifle Range Road, Ste. 46, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464, or St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 604 Pitt St., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com. Barbara,
It is with great sadness that I heard of Bob's passing. We met back in the early 70's and spent many great days swapping tales. From bartending at Myskyns to our ill fated and short lived "moving business". We laughed at that enterprise over a few beers through the years. I was so glad to run into him at the nursery in Awendaw after many years where our paths separated. He always offered a helping hand whenever it was needed, and was a true gentleman. The world is a lesser place without him in it. Carl Allen

Was sad to hear about Bob. My first memory of Bob was at Chehaw River Nursery. I was new to the industry and Bob was always helpful and willing to share his knowledge. Our paths would cross many times over the next 25 plus years as we both made a living in the Green industry. He was always a pleasure to call on, to do business with, and to compete with!.
He was a true gentleman. He will be missed.
My prayers go out to Barbara and the rest of the family.

I met Bob McKenzie around 1979 when he was bartending at Francis Willard's in Charleston. Little did I know that he and I would end up working together at Myskyn's Tavern on Market Street a few years later. Karen and I were proud to have Bob stand with us at our wedding in 1983. We remember him as a friend, a father, and a husband. Bob was a lover of fine music and always a true Gentleman. Rest in peace my friend.

I met Bob in the early 80's when he was a bartender downtown Charleston. Then we worked together at the Good Earth Landscaping for a few years.
Always a delightful fella to see when we would bump into each other in Mt. Pleasant. Barbara, my condolences to you and family.....Vaya con Dios My Friend.

I really can't say which came first. His helpfulness in business
matters or the friendship that started with that great smile & laughter.
His personality was one of the joys for all of us working in the Green
Industry. Rest in Peace Bob.

Barbara,I was very saddened to hear of Bob's passing. It is hard to believe that so much time has gone.
I realize that we have not seen each other in quite awhile. You both were among my first friends after I moved to Charleston in 1974. I enjoyed visiting you and Bob, especially watching basketball. Bobby and Connie were always welcoming and fun to be around.
I wish that our friendship had remained stronger through the years but I cannot change that. What I can say is that Bob was a great guy to have as a friend (and bartender !) He loved his family, but you know that. I hope to see him in Heaven one day. I'm not sure I'll make it but I'm sure he'll be there. My condolences to you and Bobby.
