Robert Hurst Obituary

HURST, SR., Robert Robert Russell Hurst, Sr., 89, of Bamberg, S.C., husband of the late Lorelle L. Hurst, died April 29, 2005, at a Bamberg County hospital.. Mr. Hurst was born August 28, 1915, the son of the late David Hurst and the late Elizabeth Bauer Hurst. He was a member of Episcopal Christ Church in Denmark. He served in World War II as a Naval Officer aboard the USS Savannah and the USS Ticonderoga in actions in the Mediterranean and Pacific Theatres. During this service he became close friends with Frank "Ziggy" Hartzog, of Bamberg. After the War, he completed his Law Degree from Harvard and established a Private Law Firm on Long Island, New York. He later added the management of a Family Business, Phoenix Specialty MFG. Co., to his duties. In 1966, because of his friendship in and love of Bamberg, he established Phoenix Southern Washer & Gasket in Bamberg. In 1976, he consolidated the two companies and moved the entire operation to Bamberg. He served as Chairman of the Board until 2002. He enjoyed golf and fishing. Memorial service will be 11 a.m., Monday, May 2, 2005, at Episcopal Christ Church in Denmark, S.C. Rev. Byron Tyndal officiating. Survivors include two daughters, Lorelle H. and Harry Wise and Pamela H. and Ray Squires of Bamberg, S.C.; one son, Robert R. and Cindy Hurst, Jr., of Denmark, S.C., granddaughters, Meredith Tuck, Rebecca Squires, Lorelle Baddley and Caroline Stanley; grandsons, R. Russell Hurst, III, Michael Hurst and Daniel Hurst, great-granddaughters, Eleanor and Julia Bradley, and Eliza Stanley; great-grandsons, Wyatt Stanley and Clayton Baddley, and his life-time pet Ashley. Visitation will be Sunday, May 1, 2005, at the home of Robert Hurst, Sr., from 6 to 8 p.m. COONER FUNERAL HOME, Bamberg, S.C., is in charge of arrangements.
