I only knew Bobby for the last few years. We played pool at the Sand Dollar on Sunday afternoon! He was always kind and respectful to myself and my son who was always with me! We often gave him rides to his home. In my book, he was a good friend.

We were Bobby's neighbors for the past two years, and I was fortunate to spend a lot of time with him cutting grass, building chicken coops, and working on his train set.

We have four children that Bobby loved, and they loved him. He insisted on nailing slats into my enclosed deck, covering all the openings he thought our smallest children might fall through. He also nailed railings into my bannisters outside, so he could climb the stairs more easily.

Sometimes he'd decide to cut grass at 6AM on Sunday, or he'd bang on my outdoor gong at daybreak to hang out. He'd get agitated and cuss me out, and he would tell endless stories or dirty jokes. He was my best friend, he was a family friend, we loved him, and we're all devastated that he's gone.

Gedney and family,
We send our condolences and are saddened in your grief. May God bless all of you in your loss.

Bobby was an extraordinary person with whom I was lucky enough to know. Bobby was my father's (Michael Cawley's) best friend from college at USC. The two of them together were magic...the stories they would tell were hysterical and showed their passion for life and mischief. I feel so lucky to have known him and will be forever grateful for the kindness he always showed me. I am sure he is with Michael right now telling stories and catching up on old times. My condolences to his friends and family. Bobby will always hold a special place in my heart.

I have really been down since hearing of Bobby's death. I was his roommate at Carolina. I would call him Barnabas from time-to-time-the son of encouragement, one of his best traits. He had a generous spirit and never met a stranger. I can imagine Bobby sitting at the Heavenly Bar and Grill with his old track coach, Weems Baskin, drinking whiskey and challenging each other to outlandish and hilarious tales. I loved the old fellow.

One week ago today on Super Bowl Sunday, 2019, a part of Charleston, Sullivan's Island and Folly Beach lost the presence of Bobby Howe. He touched our lives in one way or another, shared laughter with many, had a kind spirit, and had great empathy for me when he found out I had RP.

We shared Sunday School classes together and grew up at Second Presbyterian Church. Although our lives go in different directions as we get older, it's comforting to know that certain people touch our lives along the way. You are loved and will be missed.

Gedney & Family, So sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers to you all. I went to Rivers with Bobby and cheered him on to victory many times as a cheerleader, but I realize now that I didn't know him as well as I should have, after reading all the stories and kind words. He was always nice to me. Condolences to all his friends that lost a dear friend. May Rhodes Gunter

Daughter, Gedney, Donald, and the Howe Family:

Bobby was a lively member of the lawyers I often saw on Broad Street. I regret his passing, but will hold good memories of a life well-lived. Travel on into the Light of God's Love, Bobby, you made us happy and laugh; we are better humankind as Charlestonians because of you.

Bobby was a special person and a superior athlete. His athletic success did not come without a sweat and hard work. Many do not remember that Bobby, in high school was a two-time South Carolina half-mile champion and record holder during his junior and senior years at Rivers. Even more outstanding was his first place finish at the southeastern trace championships in Atlanta winning in record time 1:54.6. He was a young 17. He was also the Turkey Day record holder at 1:56.4. His athletic achievements won him a full four year track scholarship at the University of South Carolina. At USC, Bobby continue his winning ways on the track and later as a Charleston attorney. Bobby had a lot to share with many friends. His dad nick named him cat! Younger brother Donald use to run with Bobby at Hampton Park on "distance days". The family admired Bobby for his hard work and success. So, I sign off and say so long to my friend.

Sometimes people underestimated Bobby because all they ever saw was his wonderful sense of humor, but that humor was not the sum total of the man. I tried a criminal case against Bobby when I was a young prosecutor, and I remember at the end of the trial shaking my head and thinking he was well prepared, aggressive, relentless in his defense of his client, and I had underestimated him. I also remember his great heart. I have a special needs son, Dylan Haley, and one day Bobby and Kevin Holmes invited Dylan and I go to on a boat ride and look for shark teeth. Bobby was taken with Dylan and Dylan was entranced by Bobby. The two were inseparable that entire day. Indeed, Bobby came up with a nickname for Dylan that has followed him even to this date. "Dillosaurus." I know Bobby's great spirit continues because you can come up to Dylan now, give him a hug, and whisper "Dillosaurus" and he will break out into a huge smile.

Dear Howe Family,

I'm sorry about Bobby's passing. We were seniors and athletes at Rivers High School together. I was always so proud of Bobby's talents as a runner. He would encourage me when I told him I got 2 miles in before school, when he probably got many more. He was kind, funny, and supportive. When he won the half mile, I won the state tennis championship, and we cheered each other on in our athletic goals. I could always count on him to share the joy. Wish we had kept in touch over the years. My heart breaks for the Howe family.

I only knew Bobby for one year at USC but I remember him being very kind and encouraging to me. We spent many a night at Don's enjoying our teammates with a glass of beer and watching the ENs doing the shag. He graciously allowed us to gather at his beach house...some of my best memories of the Carolina Track Team. He's gone way too early.

Lost a part of my life upon the passing of Bobby. Very sad news indeed for me. Bobby was one of my very closest friends during my teen years. We trained together many times on our own. He was an amazing athlete and held the SC State record in the half mile for about ten years...even by today's standards he would still be a state champion. But more importantly he had a compassion for those in need that many never saw (a trait he got directly from his father and mother). I was the recipient of this on two occasions when I faced a crisis. He literally saved me from doom on one of these critical times and I did not even realize it at the time. Forever indebted to him for standing by me when I needed a true friend the most. Love you Bobby...you will still live in my mind always.

It is with great sadness that I read this obituary. My years in Rivers High School were full of memories of Bobby my dear friend, Bobby the amazing athelete, Bobby who made us laugh and Bobby who had such a big, loving heart. His memory will live on in those of us who knew him.

I'm so proud to have been Bobby's friend and teammate at the University of South Carolina. I was mesmerized by his stories and they will live long in my heart as well as his infectious smile and his code that You only go around once in life. A rare individual who was not afraid to dance to his own tune and I am a better person for dancing in his shadow. You will be remembered at the Bell Lap for the way you crossed the finish line. My sincere thoughts and prayers go out to your family.
