Robert Hollings Obituary

Robert Meyer Hollings, Jr. MT. PLEASANT - Robert Meyer Hollings, Jr., 63, of Mount Pleasant, died Friday, March 28, 2014. He was the husband of Karen Williams Hollings. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Hollings, Jr. are invited to attend his Memorial Service at 9:30 AM, Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 5 Clifford St. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening between 5:00 and 7:00 PM at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. His guestbook may be signed at www.JamesAMcAlister.com Robbie was born in Charleston on November 2, 1950, the son of Mary Fernhout Hollings and Robert Meyer Hollings. He attended Charleston Day School, Porter-Gaud School, and graduated from Clemson University in 1973. Following his graduation, Robbie was a co-owner of Carolina Nurseries, one of the largest commercial nurseries in the eastern United States. In later years, Robbie became an agent for Carolina One Real Estate. He was a member of The Charleston Top Producers' Club, Preservation Society of Charleston, Charleston Horticultural Society, Hibernian Society, South Carolina Society, Charleston Club and a past member of The City of Charleston Board of Zoning Appeals and The Town of Mount Pleasant Board of Zoning Appeals. Robbie was a master gardener and loved "playing in the dirt." He would start and end each day in the garden that he so carefully and thoughtfully designed. Many referred to him as "Nature Man" and he considered it the utmost compliment. Robbie was passionate about being outdoors in the Lowcountry or in the mountains surrounding his family's home in Highlands, NC. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, hiking and traveling. He and his wife, Karen, recently enjoyed a "bucket list" trip of a lifetime on a guided rafting trip through the Grand Canyon with family and several friends. Robbie was known for his enthusiasm and sense of humor. He was a gentleman, a friend, a spirited soul, and devoted father. Of all Robbie's life accomplishments, he was most proud of his children. Robbie loved and embraced their personalities, talents, and unique qualities. He was looking forward to welcoming his first grandchild. Robbie is survived by his wife, Karen Williams Hollings; two children, Robert Meyer Hollings III (Stacey) of Charleston and Emily Hollings Carley (Paul) of Naperville, IL; three step-daughters, Kelly Lesser Espinoza (Joaquin) of Washington, DC, Marianne Lesser of Mount Pleasant, and Katie Lesser of Charleston; brother, Peter F. Hollings (Mary) of Walterboro; two sisters, Julie Hollings Bower of Charleston and Pamela Hollings McConnell (Bright) of McClellanville; uncle, Senator Ernest F. Hollings of Isle of Palms; two aunts, Barbara Hollings Siegling of Charleston and Marie Hollings Epps of Fountain Inn; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and his "adopted son", Edward Polekhin of Kiev, Ukraine. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Charleston Horticultural Society, 46 Windermere Blvd. Charleston, SC, 29407. Arrangements by JAMES A. MCALISTER. My wife and I have enjoyed getting to know Robbie over the past several years and are saddened to hear of his passing. He was someone we trusted and looked forward to seeing in our trips to Charleston. I remember on one visit Robbie talking about looking forward to having lunch with his daughter. Our hearts go out to his family. We will miss you Robbie.

My sincere condolences to Robbie's family. Robbie was a mentor to me in the nursery industry. I learned a lot from him and enjoyed every conversation and visit we had. He loved his kids and life and truly made an impact on me. Every time I see sushi I think of him-still haven't acquired the taste for it, but had it for the first time with him during a tradeshow dinner. He will be missed.

We are so sorry for your sudden loss and our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My wife, Pat and daughter Cameron met Robbie when he sold Cameron her first house last year. Pat and I spent a couple of days with him last week looking for a home for ourselves.

He was such a southern gentleman. He was so kind to my daughter going above and beyond what what anyone would expect. He put me to shame opening and closing doors for my wife. She is a big northern gardener and they spent as much time discussing southern plants as they did on the houses. In the future, whenever I remember to hold a car door for her I know she will think of Robbie.

The only thing he had more passion for than plants was his family. He drove us by his sons and his sons friends house at the end of the street. He was so exited about becoming a grandfather. He treated my daughter like one of his own, making sure she got a good deal, and helping her with referrals and advice that was invaluable. He was a remarkable man.

Our sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Robbie was a true gentlemen and true friend to many. His genuine care and concern, along with getting things done (usually in an enjoyable manner) is unmatched by anyone I have ever known. My condolences to his family and his many friends. Rest in Peace Ole Buddy.

I have many fond memories of time spent with Robbie while our children were growing up. He was always so generous to open his home to all of us on a Saturday night. I also appreciated his kindness and help to my son, Matthew, after he lost his father. I will miss him.

Many fun and fond summer memories on Sullivan's Island with Robbie and sister Pam...making seine nets on the porch, building "ball castles," collecting treasures on the beach...connecting with nature and having good old fashion fun. Our little colony of families all had such great times on Station 28. Always a friend to all, a kindred spirit.

Robbie and I were close "summer friends" on Sullivan's Island in our youth--some of my fondest memories of that fondest of times were with him-clearing our houses (and neighbors) of wasps (not so smart) and building "ball castles" (smarter)---may his memory be a blessing, Sam Rosen

Robbie,Stacey and family, in the short time we have known Robbie through you two, we came to love to be around him and enjoy his company. He was just that kind of man. When you met him, he made you feel as if you had known him all your life. It is so sad he was taken too soon. He will be missed and we know Heaven is a better place with his company.
