Robert Hindman Obituary

Robert "Gene" Hindman, Jr. Greenville, SC - Robert Eugene (Gene) Hindman, Jr. joined our Heavenly Father October 4, 2022, after a brief and courageous battle with lung cancer. Gene was born in Greenville, SC, on May 18, 1942, to Robert Eugene Hindman, Sr. "Gene" and Gladys Brown Hindman. He was the middle child of Carolyn Hindman Parnell (Charlotte, NC) and James Hindman (Deceased). Following graduation from Greenville High School, he attended The Citadel. During his time at The Citadel, he was the India Company Commander, a member of both the 1964 Summerall Guards and Junior Sword Drill, a Chapel usher and member of the Honor Court. Upon his graduation, Gene was commissioned a second lieutenant in the US Air Force and served in Vietnam and surrounding countries in 1967-68. His devotion to his Faith led him to a lifetime of service to his community, where he committed his time and treasure. Gene's calling led him to devote himself to his work as the Business Officer for Furman University, Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Executive Vice President of Thornwell Children's Home, Blue Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Rotary Club of Greenville, Laurens Chamber of Commerce, and the Laurens Livestock Association. He shared fellowship in Christ with the congregations including Pelham Road Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Greenville, Edisto Presbyterian Church and Lickville Presbyterian Church. He could often be found on the road from Greenville to his beloved Edisto Beach. At Edisto, he was a board member on both The Wyndham Master Property Owners Association and The Palmetto Walk Owners Association. Gene's commitment to his family was his guiding light and absolute. That same love was devotion was given to his sweetheart and best friend, Sylvia Corbin. His kind and gentle ways, along with his great sense of humor, created a relaxing and warm environment everywhere he went. He will be missed by many but none more than his adoring son, who followed in his footsteps as a Citadel man; his sister, Carolyn; and his beloved, Sylvia. Gene is survived by children, Robert Eugene (Gene) Hindman III and Laura Watson; his sister, Carolyn Parnell; his sweetheart, Sylvia Corbin; Gene III's children, Katie and Luke Hindman; Laura's daughter, Sarah Watson; nephews, Scott Parnell, Mike Parnell, James Hindman; and niece, Andrea Hindman. A celebration of Gene's life will be held at the Mackey Funeral Home, located at 311 Century Drive, Greenville, SC 29607 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 13, 2022. Condolences to the family. Gene and I were classmates at the Citadel and served as chapel ushers together as well as having several business classes together. I thought a lot of Gene. Know you will miss him but we also he is with the Lord and no more pain or tears.
