I was saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Burbage. I have very fond memories coming to Charleston to visit my grandmother on Rutledge & So. Battery because I would get to go to Mr. Brubage's. He always knew who I was and knew what grandchildren were coming to visit by what soft drinks she ordered. He was a remarkable man. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I write this with remembrance for a fine man. Mr. burbage was a good leader and man throughout his life. He was always willing to lend a hand if someone needed it and was good with advise when a young person needed some leadership. I send this message with fond memories of growing up downtown and knowing this fine individual personally.I hope only the best for his family and friends.

Our thoughts and and prayers are with you all. Having grown up on Savage Street, Mr Burbage's kindness has always been part of my favorite childhood memories. Grabbing a treat at Burbage's has become a tradition for my children when we come to town. I am so glad they were able to meet him. He will be missed!

There are so many wonderful memories of him being a caring and kind man... I will always cherish the kindness, smiles and laughter he shared with me when I had a rough day... My mother passed in October this year and I can just about bet there is a lot of laughter going on... What a blessing to know Mr. B and his family. Thank you and God Bless all of you... Virginia

I grew up on Lenwood and always went to see Mr. B with my .25 allowance on Saturdays. He was a wonderful man and tolerated all of us when we went in and asked how much everything was. I can remember sitting on the Coke cooler at this store on Tradd and talking to him. Charleston will not be the same without him. He was a true mentor to us all and will be sorely missed.

Al and Myrtis,
There was never a finer and kinder Christian gentleman. "Mr Burbage" and "Burbage's" were icons for our children growing up downtown, and he knew them all by name. In losing both him and Hazel Parker, growing up South of Broad will never be the same. We will all miss him.

I am sorry to hear about Mr Burbage's passing. I was an order filler for him in mid 1960's. My mom Jewell White also knew him well. I had recently met his son in his store and asked him to give his dad my regards. Bless all of you in your great loss of a wonderful man.

I will always remember Mr. Burbage's kind, sweet smile. He always made me feel special, remembered my name, asked about my family, even when he hadn't seen me in a long time. A man of God who exuded integrity and love.

To Al and Matthew:
I send my deepest sympathies for the loss of your dear father. The day my moving van was due to arrive at my new house, I rushed to Burbages to buy a broom so all the leaves wouldn't be tracked in. I told Mr. Burbage who was and what house I was moving into. The next time I went into his store, he said, "Hello Mrs. Gordon" I was so impressed with him and always enjoyed talking with him, until the last time I saw him in the store. I am so sad to hear of his death. Sandra Gordon.

Mr. Burbage was a fixture of my childhood on Tradd Street and I will never forget him. He was always kind and caring, and I loved his store! "Mr. Burbage's" is engrained in my memories of childhood. Condolences to the family and may Mr. Burbage be remembered as a kind of humble community business person that is sometimes hard to find today. His family should be proud.

November 16, 2011

I grew up on Council Street and remember both stores there as well as the one on Broad. As a child I was almost a daily visitor to the store. I moved away in the 70's, but when I returned in 1995, Mr. Burbage remembered me! He called me by name without any hints! He was a remarkable man and will continue to be a permanent fixture in my memory! My condolences to his family.

Mr. Burbage will always be remembered by me as a very kind man and a great neighbor. Sorry again for your loss

Dear Aunt Doris, Doris Marie, Al and Matt,
I can't begin to tell you how much Uncle Bob has meant to me and my family over the years. Having him so close in his store was comforting to say the least. When Mama was having a terrible time financially, he let her have credit to keep us eating. I don't know of too many people that would be willing to do that! When it came time for my wedding, he was right there on my arm keeping me calm walking me right down that aisle. What an honor that was for me to have him carry me down.
I know you all will miss him terribly just as all of us will, but know he is with Jesus and is able to breath, talk and dance around in heaven. I know he's waiting on the rest of us to make our passing over to be with him again. Just think of all the people that were waiting on him. I know he was glad to see them.
We love you all and want to be there for you. Keep strong and know we are praying for you every day!
Love,
Pat Wannamaker
