Robert Anderson Obituary

ANDERSON, Robert Dr. Robert Maxwell Anderson died Sunday at his residence. He was born in Charleston, February 10, 1921, son of Samuel Pickens Anderson and Jane Miller Anderson. The relatives and friends of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Maxwell Anderson are invited to attend the Funeral Service of the former, Wednesday, April 20, 2005 at two-thirty o'clock in St. Philip's Episcopal Church. Burial, Churchyard. Dr. Anderson graduated from the High School of Charleston and from the Citadel, in the Class of 1942. He graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina, and served in the U.S. Army-Air Corps for two years during World War II. He then held a two-year Medical Residency at Bowman Gray School of Medicine and a three year proctorship in Cardiology at Roper Hospital. He practiced Internal Medicine in Charleston for 43 years, retiring in 1995. Dr. Anderson was a member of the Charleston County Medical Society, serving as secretary for several years; the Medical Society of South Carolina; the South Carolina Medical Association; the Southern Medical Association; the American Medical Association; and Alpha Omega Alpha, an honorary medical society. He belonged to The Carolina Yacht Club, The St. Andrews Society and the Albemarle Supper Club. He was a member of the Charleston Lions Club for 42 years, serving as president for one term. In 2001 he was given the Melvin Jones Fellow award, the highest award in Lionism. He was also a Master Gardener. Dr. Anderson was an active member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, where he taught Sunday school and served as Sunday school superintendent. He was twice a member of the Vestry, serving as junior warden and senior warden. He sang in the church choir for many years, and, as a Church Mouse, conducted tours for visitors to the church. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Middleton Anderson, and four children: Dr. Robert Maxwell Anderson Jr. of Isle of Palms, Lois Anderson Gualandi of Charleston, Dr. Charles Middleton Anderson of Mount Pleasant, and Thomas Randolph Anderson of Charleston; their spouses and eleven grandchildren: Elizabeth Anderson Steele, Juliet Miller Anderson, Robert Maxwell Anderson III, Edward Jones Anderson, Richard James Gualandi Jr., Heyward Brent Gualandi, Sandra Simons Anderson, Carley McCall Anderson, Frances Middleton Anderson, Felicia Hurtel Anderson and Dorothy Grimball Anderson. He is also survived by a brother, Henry Miller Anderson of Charleston, and a sister, Jane Anderson Wilbur of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. One brother, Samuel Pickens Anderson, pre-deceased him.
