To the Powers family,

My deepest condolences to your family.
While many years have past, I will always remember sitting at the table (on Willowwood dr.) talking to Dick, sometimes for hours, getting advice on many subjects in life.
But, most of all, thanks to him, I learned not to be a quitter.
In 1976, I entered the army, within 3 months I was ready to quit. When Dick heard of my plans, he called me at Fort Dix, N.J.
He gave me a pep talk that changed the direction of my life.
When he told me that he heard that I was quitting the army, I was expecting him to say "you tried your best" , but then the true Navy Master CPO came out. He told me (in a very stearn way) that if I quit, I would regret that decision forever, that I had signed a contract with the army, and I needed to grow up and do the job that I had taken on.
After that lecture I was not about to quit. I was more afraid to face him as a quitter than to deal with army life! The philosophy of not quitting no matter how tough things are, has stayed with me for all these years and has allowed me to succeed in my life. If I had quit the Army, I would, as Dick put it, be a quitter for the rest of my life. Without that lecture, I'm sure that I would have turned out differently.
He truly had an impact on my life.

Dottie : My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of sorrow.
Richie and I were stationed aboard the USS Willard Keith DD 775, from 1950 to 1952 We both lived in Philly at that time. We spent many liberties together both at home & in Europe.
I will add his name to the Willard Keith Honor Roll.
Rest in peace old pal.

To Richard Powers family

I was saddened to hear of Dicks death and I offer my condolences. I'm from Philadelphia and grew up with your Husband and Father, in the old Tasker project in South Philly. I also went to Southeast Catholic high and St Gabriels grade school, he was a great guy. I know you know that, but I want to tell you he was always a great guy. I lost track of him and not seen or talked to him for over 50 years. Recently I did a search for him and a few other guys, on the computer to see if I could locate them. I had no sucess. He was my friend and he still is. We made lifelong friends in that project, it's a shame we lost contact. I joined the navy in 1950 and I see he was in navy too. He did a lot better than me I left navy as a seaman 1st class, but he was always a better student than me. I'll keep him in my prayers as I do all my old friends who have passed.
