Richard E. Melton CHARLESTON - Richard E. Melton, 81, husband of Marie Edgington Melton, entered into eternal rest Saturday, November 2, 2024. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Thursday, November 7, 2024, at St. John's Catholic Church, 3921 St. John's Avenue, N. Charleston. The family will receive friends between 5:00 & 7:00 PM Wednesday at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston. A private Rite of Committal, with military honors, will take place Friday at Beaufort National Cemetery. Richard was born March 9, 1943, a son of the late Eleanor Drake and Talvin R. Melton. Richard grew up in Columbia, SC and attended Dreher High School. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business and Finance from the University of South Carolina in 1965, where he lettered in football and track, showcasing his athletic talent. A lifelong Gamecock fan, Richard was also a proud member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He proudly served as a Vietnam veteran, participating in combat from January 1967 to December 1967, an experience that shaped his life and character. Richard was also a dedicated civic activist throughout his life, serving on several boards, including Richland Memorial Hospital, the South Carolina Association of Hospital Governing Boards, the Columbia Community Relations Council, and the Columbia Housing Development Corporation. His commitment to improving the lives of others was evident in all his endeavors. In 1971, Richard married the love of his life, Marie Edgington Melton. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Ted Melton and Tina Melton Fralix, wife of Jason Fralix, who were a source of great pride and joy for him. Richard was also a loving grandfather to Cooper Ashton Melton, Tanner Fralix, and Taylor Fralix, who brought him immense joy and happiness. He was a devoted brother to Duane Melton, Sue Ellen Melton Porter, and Jacquelyn Bull Schumer. Arrangements by James A. McAlister, (843) 766-1365.
