Richard McGillivray Obituary

Richard Morrison McGillivray, Jr. Mt. Pleasant - Richard Morrison McGillivray, Jr. entered into eternal rest on January 22, 2019, at the age of 82. He was born on June 24, 1936, as the eldest son of the late Richard Morrison McGillivray Sr. and Florence Barbour McGillivray of Charleston, SC. He attended Charleston Day School and St Andrews High School. He graduated from the Citadel and later graduated from the Westlawn School of Yacht Design in Stamford, Connecticut. Dick was a native Charlestonian but spent much of his adult life living in Mt Pleasant, SC.He was a past President of Rotary Club of Mt Pleasant and a charter member of East Cooper Rotary Breakfast Club. Dick also served as past President of the Board of Family and Children Services in Charleston. He is a member of Mt Pleasant Presbyterian Church. Dick's vocation and hobby centered around his passion for boating. In his twenty years away from Charleston, he was National Sales Manager of Kenyon Marine and MFG Boat Company. Missing family, friends, and the Charleston Harbor he returned to Charleston to open U.S. Marine Services. He was the past owner of Hobcaw Creek Docks Marina. Dedication to the sport of sailing was demonstrated thru his participation on race committees of four yacht clubs. He was a past Commodore of the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association, a past Commodore of Sea Island Yacht Club, a past Commodore of Charleston Yacht Club, a past Vice Commodore of Hobcaw Yacht Club, and a present member of the Carolina Yacht Club in Charleston. Dick held Four National Sailing Championships and in 2002 he and his crew won Charleston Race Week which is a national race. He was honored with the Katrinka Award from the Carolina Yacht Club, the Spirit of Rockville Award from Sea Island Yacht Club, the Lockwood Award from the Charleston Yacht Club,and the Willard Davis Award from SAYRA. He is survived by his devoted wife of 22 years, Sheryl Gaultney McGillivray; his two brothers and their wives Alec McGillivray (Phyllis) and Bob McGillivray (Vickie) ; his daughter Elizabeth Woodworth (David); and Sharon Bernhardt. A memorial service will be held at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road on January 26, 2019, at 1:00 pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private at Wappetaw Presbyterian Church Cemetery in McClellanville, SC. The family is thankful for years of care from Dr. Richard Mills, Dr. William Grossman, and Dr. John Lucas. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association of SC Memorial and Tributes Processing Center, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060. When my son was younger, I will never forget Dick's kindness to allow me to take him fishing in the Hobcaw pond. That allowed me to make some life memories. It's those simple things that matter. I also enjoyed seeing and talking with him at Mt P senior center.
