Richard Kay Obituary

Richard "Dick" Kay Rock Hill, SC - Richard Mason "Dick" Kay, Jr., 69, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 10, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. The memorial service will be held at 11am on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church, Rock Hill with Revs. Richard W. Carr, III and T. Mark Verdery officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A native of Belton, Mr. Kay had been a resident and businessman of Rock Hill for the past 44 years, owner of the Dick Kay State Farm Insurance Agency. He was the youngest son of the late Richard Mason Kay, Sr. and Virginia K. Kay. Dick attended Belton Schools, graduating from Belton High School in 1964. He was a graduate of Anderson College in 1967 and Charleston Southern University in 1969. Dick served in the US Army's elite Honor Guard in Washington, DC (Ft. Myer's Old Guard, 1st Battalion) from 1969 to 1971, with ceremonial duties at Arlington Cemetery, The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the White House, where he served with distinction. Dick became associated with State Farm Insurance and found his life's work. His infectious good humor, customer service and sound business practices made his agency one of the largest in the state. Dick was a member of the Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce, the Belton Area Museum Association, served on many boards, and was a member of the Sertoma Club. Surviving are his devoted wife of 47 years, June Davis Kay; his son, Richard M. Kay, III (Christie) of Indian Trail, NC; his daughter, Ashley N. Kay of James Island, SC; two granddaughters, Emily and Caroline Kay; his brother, William Donald Kay (Maria) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his sister, Patricia Kay Bolen (Steve) of Greenville, SC; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of special friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Kay's name to First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 1011, Rock Hill, SC 29731; or to the National Kidney Foundation of South Carolina, 5000 Thurmond Mall, Suite 106, Columbia, SC 29201. It´s been almost five years now, but I still miss this guy in the worst way. No matter what the circumstances, good or bad, Dick always had the time to talk, and somehow after a conversation with him, you always felt better than before the conversation. One of the greatest, and most real guys with whom I ever crossed paths. Dick was also one of the greatest story tellers that ever lived. Miss you, my man!

Dear Mrs. Kay and family,
I was a dear friend of Les McEwen, and I recall Les speaking fondly of Dick and the time spent together at the "Baptist College". For Les, those were truly his best college years. Dick and his fraternity brothers had a very special bond and the one large reunion that took place a few years back was a tremendous weekend for them.
My sincerest condolences to you and the family for your loss.
