I was incredibly sad to hear the news this afternoon. Richard was one of the most intelligent people I´ve ever met. He was someone who I sought advice from, because he had tremendous judgment and would always tell you the truth in a way where you got the sense that any good fortune that you experienced, he would celebrate it as much as you would. His quick wit always made me laugh, and there are phrases Richard often used which I use now and immediately think of him. He was so proud of Christian and for good reason. I will sorely miss Richard. He is someone who I feel fortunate to have called a dear friend.

A piece of me has left with Richard. I have known Richard since Jr High School. We became good friends in our Senior year. He became part of my family growing up and we always joked that my Mother liked him best. Heck, I think even my wife liked Richard more. To know him was to love him. An incredible human being. So intelligent, stoic and honorable. I feel such a void in the universe with him gone. He was a force of good and fairness. He will be irreplaceable. He was so proud of Christian and my heart goes out to him: You're Dad was the best. I will also miss his wicked humor. Rest in Peace Richard.

Rich took me under his wing early in my years at the Post and Courier and taught me a lot about how to do the job professionally. I know how proud he was of Christian and how much joy he took in his successes. Prayers for Rich, Christian and all who will miss Rich

Richard was a mentor to me while I was an intern at the Post & Courier and then when I was the SID at The Citadel. He I became very good friends, and my heart aches over his passing, even more so because I didn´t catch back up with him. Rest in peace, Rich!!

I officiated many scrimmages and exhibition games for coach Kresse. I always was impressed by how many times he was there, then took the time to establish relationships with myself and others. Many don't know or recall he helped coach write a book about basketball.
I've always missed his well balanced and researched columns.
I'm sure he is now in basketball heaven!

The passing of a fine gentleman, may Richard´s soul rest in peace.
I enjoyed Rich as a lunch customer for years at my pub on King St. Always looked forward to our visits. Rich was intelligent, insightful, and a kind soul.
He will be missed.

So sorry to hear the sad news about Rich. He was good guy and one of the forerunners of writing about women´s basketball with all of his weekly duties of writing many mens sports and especially our well deserving Cougs coached by legend John Kresse. Such a good writer and no poison in his pen. He was fair to all. My you rest in peace and rise in glory. Love and condolences to all the family.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. I got to know Rich while playing for the College of Charleston back in the 80´s and Rich was the lead sports columnist for the Post and Courier. He was a true professional and was great at his craft! He made a point to get to know us on a personal level and that came through in his writing. He loved C of C hoops and I know we all loved him! I´m sure he´s already working on his next story in heaven! Rest in Peace Rich and God Bless! With Deep Sympathy to his son and his family. Ed Nierstedt
