Richard Hogan, II RALEIGH, NC - Richard Holt Hogan II died Thursday, February 1, 2024, at age 27 after a life of giving generously to family and friends. Holt was born April 20, 1996, in South Boston, Virginia, the son of Clarke Noble Hogan and Ellen Gray Nicholson Maybank. A proud native of South Boston, Holt graduated from Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Virginia, in 2014 where he was distinguished with the James Ira Pritchett III '30 Big Brother Award, the Frederick William Carrington '41 Memorial Award, and selection as a School Counselor and Bishop Ambassador. Prior to starting college, he was awarded the English Speaking Union Scholarship and attended the Ackworth School in Yorkshire, England, where he was recognized with the McRobert Cup for Excellence and Support in Sport. Holt graduated from Sewanee, the University of the South, in 2020, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. At Sewanee, Holt also joined the Sportsman's House, and the Highlander Society. After graduation, Holt launched his career in business joining Fidelity Investments in Raleigh, North Carolina. He quickly earned a reputation for his extraordinary work ethic, integrity, honesty, and "compassion and care for his fellow co-worker." Easily described as a sports fanatic, Holt loved participating in and watching all sports with tennis as his best-loved. He was an enthusiastic and devoted Atlanta Braves fan, attending his first Braves game at age 6 and witnessing their 2021 World Series win. An avid sportsman, Holt took every opportunity to be in the outdoors, treasuring the companionship he experienced with his fellow sportsmen. He was a consummate people person, making everyone he met feel special and included. He had a knack for creating nicknames and making everyone smile. He had boundless curiosity and was willing to join his friends and family in any adventure. Holt's greatest joy was spending time with his family, particularly 27 family summers in Mere Point, Maine, and holidays in South Carolina. He approached his role as son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend with intense loyalty and love. He encouraged all whom he loved to follow their passions. His greatest happiness was rejoicing in the accomplishments of those he loved. He is best described by the quote, "Who better to have in your circle?" Holt will always be remembered for his infectious laugh, the mischievous twinkle in his eye, and his tremendous heart full of enthusiasm, passion, love, and kindness. Holt was a man of faith. We are especially thankful for his pursuit of a closer relationship with the Lord and for his public witness. "Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end." (Psalm 119:33) "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth." (Romans 1:16) Holt is survived by Ellen Gray Nicholson Maybank, and Clarke Noble Hogan and Marsha Anne Hogan; siblings, Douglas Huguenin Hogan, Monte Nicholson Hogan, Elizabeth Maybank Hogan, Casey Anne Gartland, and Charles Hunt Hogan; grandparents, Amey Parsons Lewis, Fulton DeWitt Lewis, Jr., Ann English Maybank, and Jane Noble Hogan; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. Holt was preceded in death by his grandfathers, David Huguenin Maybank and Richard Holt Hogan.
