Richard Haughey Obituary

Richard O. Haughey Charleston - Richard O. Haughey passed away on August 9, 2021, at home in Charleston, SC. At 17, Richard left the family home in Brooklyn, NY, to attend the US Coast Guard Academy where he made lifelong friends. Richard went on to earn two graduate degrees from MIT and then began to travel the world including two trips to the poles on the Coast Guard icebreaker, the Eastwind. While stationed in Washington, D.C., he met his partner for his next adventure, Janet Horan Haughey. They married and moved to Florida before he retired as a Captain in the US Coast Guard. He and Janet then settled in Charleston and had daughter, Joanna Elizabeth Haughey Allen as he finished another graduate degree and took on a second career as a member of the Business Department faculty at the Citadel. He shared his love for the ocean with his wife and daughter by making the beach a priority for the family's summer vacations. He is predeceased by his parents, Charles D. Haughey and Elizabeth Ross Haughey and his two brothers, Charles D. Haughey Jr. and James R. Haughey. He is survived by his wife, Janet; and daughter, Joanna in Charleston; as well as his nieces and nephews, Peggy (Mark) Dvorak, Nancy (Gregory) Meidel, Susan (Chris) Moret, Ann (Bob) Walsh, James Haughey Jr. and David (Paula) Haughey in California. A small family service is planned at Mepkin Abbey where Richard will be laid to rest. Arrangements by James A. McAlister, Inc., 1620 Savannah Hwy., Charleston, SC 29407, (843) 766-1365. RICHARD JACOBS

August 18, 2021

Dick was a classmate and friend at the USCG Academy. The fortunes of the assignment Gods did not let Dick and I serve together, but we did attend several class reunions. The bonds of friendship we all forged during our 4 years together, remained, as ever. My wife Claire, and I, had the good fortune to meet Janet at one of those reunions, and the four of us expanded that bond. My sympathy and regards to Janet, and all of Dick's family.
