Richard Gibson Obituary

Richard Milton Gibson Charleston - It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Richard Milton Gibson of Charleston, SC, on Thursday, December 15, 2022, at the age of 84. Richard did not recover after undergoing bypass surgery. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Elizabeth Shuttleworth of 32 years; and his younger sister, Judith Horrigan (Timothy) of Chicago, IL. Richard was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Harriet Gibson; and his brothers: Donald, Warren and Jack. He was a beloved brother-in-law to Anthony and Suzette Shuttleworth (South Africa) and cherished his role as a loving uncle to all his nieces and nephews and their children. Richard had been a noted practicing Clinical Psychotherapist for 20 years, the last eight in Charleston where he built a large practice. He had previously lived and practiced in Philadelphia, PA. Richard was a multifaceted individual, passionate about sailing, a committed captain with Vets on Deck and dedicated to his patients. He was a gentle and kind friend to all who knew him. Richard sailed less than a month ago and counseled his patients up to the day before his surgery. Although he will be sorely missed, he left the world the way he would have wanted to - active to the end. A celebration of life will be held in the Spring of 2023. Please visit J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Funeral Home website to leave thoughts or memories of Richard at www.jhenrystuhr.com. Donations in Richard's name may be made to Veterans on Deck at www.veteransondeck.org. Because of my work with Richard Gibson and EMDR I am a changed person for the better. I'm sure he helped countless others also. The world is indeed a better place because of him. I sent him an email recently saying I looked forward to having some more sessions with him after Covid. I regret I will no longer have the opportunity. My condolences to the family. He seemed like a person who would never blow his own horn and yet he was a great person. He will be missed.

We are so sorry for your loss. Richard was so active and happy right up to his surgery. He was a good friend and shipmate. We will always treasure our memories of our time chartering with him and Elizabeth in Greece. We have attached some photos of Richard -- naturally almost all are on boats in Greece and Maine!
